Former President Donald Trump submitted that a federal appeals court’s rejection of his unprecedented claim to immunity from criminal prosecution could result in prison sentences for two of his predecessors as well as his successor in the Oval Office on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals issued an opinion declaring that Trump can be prosecuted for criminal acts he is alleged to have committed as president.

“For the purpose of this criminal case, former President Trump has become citizen Trump, with all of the defenses of any other criminal defendant,” read the opinion. “Any executive immunity that may have protected him while he served as President no longer protects him against this prosecution.”

But Trump and his allies insist that the decision opens the door to all sorts of undesirable ripple effects, including the jailing of all who have or will in the future serve as commander-in-chief.

“If a President does not have Immunity, the Opposing Party, during his/her term in Office, can extort and blackmail the President by saying that, ‘if you don’t give us everything we want, we will Indict you for things you did while in Office,’ even if everything done was totally Legal and Appropriate,” argued Trump in a Truth Social post on Wednesday. “That would be the end of the Presidency, and our Country, as we know it, and is just one of the many Traps there would be for a President without Presidential Immunity. Obama, Bush, and soon, Crooked Joe Biden, would all be in PRISON. Protect Presidential Immunity. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Stephen Miller, an advisor to Trump during his first term, made the same argument on Tuesday, even going so far as to construct a hypothetical under which Biden and “everyone” in his administration might be thrown in jail after he leaves office.

Trump is expected to ask the Supreme Court to overturn the decision, in what would be a landmark case, as he navigates the various criminal charges leveled against him and seeks a second term in the White House.
