CNN’s Audie Cornish says the White House is in a panic over the damaging special counsel findings on President Joe Biden that are a “gift that keeps on giving” for his opponents and critics.

Speaking with Alex Marquardt and other panel members on CNN’s The Situation Room on Friday, podcaster and former NPR host Cornish acknowledged not only that the report on Biden’s memory and mental fitness hurt Biden, who has faced increasingly bad polling in part due to concerns about his age, but that the Biden team knows how bad it is, and their response so far shows it.

Marquardt asked Cornish about Biden’s angry presser “forcefully pushing back” after the damning report, and whether it would even “dampen the growing questions about Biden’s fitness” — which a few think it did but many others felt did not go so well at all.

“I’m just going to deploy one of the most cliché of clichés about, if you’re explaining, you’re losing,” said Cornish. “I think you can tell by just how many people are coming out, what they’re saying, the way they’re saying it, that there is basically a bit of a panic going on.”

She added that, “special counsel reports, they’re kind of like the gift that keeps on giving,” in reference to how such moments have worked out in the past.

They soon discussed Paul Begala’s reaction to the presser which, employed the concepts of bed-wetting and sleeplessness over how “terrible” the situation really is for Biden and the Democrats.

MARQUARDT: You think that this administration tactic of forcefully pushing back has really done anything to dampen the growing questions about Biden’s fitness after this scathing report from Robert Hur?

CORNISH: I’m just going to deploy one of the most cliché of clichés about, if you’re explaining, you’re losing.

I think you can tell by just how many people are coming out, what they’re saying, the way they’re saying it, that there is basically a bit of a panic going on. And just to add one more note. You know, special counsel reports, they’re kind of like the gift that keeps on giving.

You know, this is why there’s such a battle when there is going to be a special counsel appointed. Because, at the end of the day, you don’t really know what you’re going to get.

And so far, the last 15, 20 years or so, Americans have gotten reports of one kind or another that underscore and create almost whole new political firestorms on their own.

MARQUARDT: And of course, the point of a special counsel is their independence.
