President Donald Trump went to bat during Friday’s Cabinet meeting for his highly controversial $1.8 billion “weaponization” fund, which he claimed is currently “dead” while making clear he wished it were not.

Trump’s Justice Department agreed to drop the fund earlier in the summer amid a bipartisan outcry, with critics claiming it would be a taxpayer-fueled “slush fund” for the president’s allies.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) has refused to back Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, until Blanche provides written guarantee making clear the fund is dead once and for all.

Blanche conceded during his confirmation hearing that the fund in its current form could be revived at anytime.

“Just to be clear, do you agree with the acting attorney general that the anti-weaponization fund is dead? And why not just put that in writing?” a reporter asked Trump during the meeting.

“Well, it is dead, but, you know, I wish it weren’t, to be honest with you,” Trump replied, adding:

I think people were horribly treated, horribly abused — this has nothing to do with Todd, this was me — horribly abused. And I’d like to see them compensated for the pain. They lost their families. They committed suicide. Many people committed suicide. They went down for an innocent journey. And I’m not only talking about that — I’m talking about something that doesn’t even have to do with that — the way they were treated. The Biden administration and the Obama administration weaponized government and destroyed lives.

“But should they put it in writing? Do you agree to accept limits on the scope of the audit immunity deal in order to get Attorney General Blanche confirmed?” followed up various reporters yelling questions.

“Well, now, he should be approved forthwith. I mean, you’re never going to get a person like that. Everybody agrees to it. Don’t forget, Senator Cornyn thought he was phenomenal — until he lost. You know, when he lost — is that a correct statement? You come from Texas. I mean, he thought this was the most incredible person, and then, when he… Now he lost because of me. I endorsed somebody else. I mean, as soon as I endorsed the other person, the other became a rocket ship upward, and he lost,” Trump replied, jabbing Cornyn.

“And, you know, I think I’d be the same — I mean, I shouldn’t say that, but I’d be upset also, and so I fully understand it. He shouldn’t be that way, I shouldn’t be that way, but he is that way. He’s become a very angry person. And I understand you have a couple of others that… of course they’re the feed to, and you know, you’ll probably hear from them too,” Trump concluded, referring to Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), who has also insisted the fund be killed in writing before Blanche is confirmed.

Full disclosure: I'm all-in on the Apple ecosystem, and I don't necessarily plan to switch anytime soon—but that doesn't mean I don't peek at what could be. I have few complaints about my aging Apple Watch, but, I'll admit, Android smartwatches can be pretty cool. While I don't think I'd be doing a whole lot of web browsing on my watch, the fact that the Galaxy Watch has a dedicated browser is a great feature. (For the uninitiated: Apple Watches have a built-in web browser that only appears when watchOS deems a search relevant. There is no Safari app for the Apple Watch.)

If you have a Galaxy Watch, you probably already know you can install Samsung Browser on your device. What you might not know, however, is that your wearable web browser just got an excellent upgrade that makes it function even more like a desktop web browser. As reported by SamMobile, Samsung Browser for Galaxy Watch now lets you download images from webpages. That means if you stumble across a picture on the web, you can download it directly to your Galaxy Watch, rather than switch to your phone, tablet, or computer to save it.

How to download images on your Galaxy Watch's Samsung Browser

First, update Samsung Browser to its latest version, then open it and navigate to a webpage of your choosing. When you find an image you want to download, long-press on the image, and you'll see a new "Download Image" option. Tap it, and your image will save on your watch. You can find all downloaded images in the "Downloads" folder on the Samsung Browser home page.

SamMobile notes that this option doesn't seem to work until the website has fully loaded. As such, you may need to wait a bit longer than you might expect before you're able to download an image. In addition, there are some limitations: You can download PNG, JPEG, JPG, and GIFs up to 10MB. If you come across a different file type, or the image in question is too large, you won't be able to download it.

This should work on any Galaxy Watch that can run the latest version of Samsung Browser. However, if you're in the market for an upgrade, Samsung recently announced the Galaxy Watch 9 at its July Unpacked event. The watch is due out Aug. 7, so you can preorder it now or wait until it comes out to see if older Galaxy Watches come down in price.

CNN’s Dana Bash and Fox News’ Mark Levin found some common ground on the subject of cursing following a fiery Senate hearing in which Dr. Anthony Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times.

Both Bash and Levin blasted the use of profanity during the Wednesday hearing. Fauci faced tough questions from heated Republican senators over the Covid-19 pandemic, the virus’s origins, and lockdown measures previously taken. Many accused him of tarnishing his legacy, but Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) threw multiple expletives at Fauci, including asking him, “Who the f*ck do you think you were, doing that!?”

On Thursday’s Inside Politics, Bash played a clip of the heated moment with Moreno, who blasted Fauci over lockdown measures taken during the pandemic and said they were his motivation for running for office.

“Here I am, sitting in front of you six years later, saying: who the f*ck do you think you were, doing that!? It is a total disgrace, what you did to this country,” the senator said.

“Yup. That was a United States senator in a formal hearing directing an F-bomb at an 85-year-old scientist who devoted his life to public service and public health…Really?” Bash said.

The CNN anchor argued the moment “eroded Senate hearing decorum, whatever’s left of it, more than most.”

It was not the only curse word Moreno threw at Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. At another point, Moreno asked Fauci if he thought he was in “deep sh*t” because he brought a team of lawyers to the hearing.

Bash said the profanity allowed Moreno to break through the “cacophony” of criticism thrown at Fauci and she argued the use of curses is becoming a “stunning” trend in Washington, D.C., from President Donald Trump on down.

Bash echoed comments made by Levin about the moment at the Fauci hearing. The Fox News host took to X to voice his disapproval on Wednesday evenin.

“Call me a prude, but I do not like public officials using the “f -word” in public, where little kids can hear it or even proper adults don’t like it,” he wrote.

If you want to lean a bit more into plain old funny stuff, this modern classic is perfect. There’s no multiverse here, but there is a lot of affectionate humor aimed squarely at sci-fi tropes (especially the Star Trek universe and its, er, passionate fans). Galaxy Quest was a Trek-like TV series that aliens called Thermians believe was a documentary. When their civilization is threatened by a villain named Sarris, they kidnap the cast (including Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, and Sam Rockwell) of the TV series to help them defeat Sarris, and, yes, hilarity ensues. But also a lot of heart and character development, if that’s your bag.

A songwriter blasted President Donald Trump as a “fat f*ck” after fans flagged his tune was being used by the White House on social media without permission.

Noah Kahan and his “American Cars” co-writer Noah Levin protested after their song was used on Instagram and Tiktok.

“Would never approve of my music being used in support of you or this administration,” Kahan wrote Tuesday on Instagram after he was tagged by fans over the video using his music.

Variety first picked up the comments from Kahan and his co-writer.

The offending social media post features images of the president visiting a General Motors’ flagship test site in Michigan.

While the sound appears to be disabled on the post on Instagram, it could still be heard in the TikTok post.

Levine also commented on one of the posts, writing, “You fat f*ck this song isn’t for you.”

Trump and the White House have faced plenty of complaints about using musicians’ music.

The latest came Saturday from singer Katy Perry, who is dating former Canadian Prime Minister and Trump foe Justin Trudeau.

Perry objected to the White House’s use of her song “Firework.”

The singer was particularly offended by her song being used as music to play over military strikes.

“I am deeply appalled and angry to see “Firework” used on the @WhiteHouse TikTok account as a backing track for video footage of military strikes. I did not approve this, I was not asked, and I absolutely do not condone it,” she wrote.

Perry added that her song is a “an anthem of hope, healing, and inner strength for people going through their darkest personal moments” and not a celebration of warfare.

If you're an Android user who is seeing ads pop up after your phone calls, you need not assume this is some new feature you have to learn to live with. It's actually an ad fraud scam, and you can do something about it. Researchers have identified dozens of apps on the Google Play Store that are able to display ads on top of the Android phone interface, a scheme known as AfterCall.

How ads are taking over Android calls

This scam originates with seemingly harmless utility apps downloaded from the Google Play Store, such as calendars, alarm clocks, and notepads. When installed, they request overlay permissions, which allow them to appear on top of other apps—and thus display ads over phone calls. These apps can detect when a call ends and will then launch full-screen ads wrapped in a fake call info screen. Since it looks like they are simply part of the call interface, users may be less likely to suspect that they are actually malicious.

It's worth noting that overlay permissions can't be granted via a standard pop-up during the app installation process. They are a type of "special permission" that requires users to go into their system settings to enable. Android apps are supposed to request these permissions in context and give a clear reason for doing so. AfterCall scammers are using justifications like alarms not being able to go off or appear correctly without overlay permissions, though some apps will simply crash if users decline permissions.

How to remove AfterCall ads

Because the ads appear out of context—after a phone call and with content unrelated to the utility app—it's harder for users to figure out what's causing them. The utility apps aren't obviously malicious and don't appear on recent app lists when ads are displayed, so it's not obvious that they are connected to the problem.

If you are seeing ads pop up after phone calls on your Android, check for apps that have overlay permissions. Go to Settings > Apps > Special app access (this may be hidden behind a three-dot menu) and click on the permission type. Look for apps you don't recognize, or which shouldn't have "display on top" permissions, and uninstall them. You should regularly audit these permissions, and disable any that aren't essential.

On the user side, these apps seem to be mostly an annoyance rather than outright malicious programs that are harvesting your sensitive data, though installing any program that requests unnecessary permissions can introduce significant risk. If nothing else, however, these apps do appear to waste brands' advertising dollars and could damage their reputation with users—but you probably just care about how to stop seeing them after your calls.

President Donald Trump vowed on Tuesday to give a “high civilian honor” to a lifeguard seen saving the life of a young boy in a viral video — after his son, Eric Trump, requested he do so.

Video of the pulse-pounding rescue showed the 16-year-old lifeguard never losing his grip on the child as he battled the relentless surf at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California, over the weekend.

Beachgoer Scott Vander Dussen shot footage of the save and posted it to his SantaCruzNow Instagram page on Sunday.

The video spread like wildfire on social media, quickly garnering millions of views.

One of those viewers was Eric Trump, who shared the video on Monday.

“Give this 16-year-old lifeguard the highest civilian honor,” Eric Trump posted on X along with the video. “This is truly the best of America! Well done!”

On Tuesday, President Trump posted a screengrab of Eric’s tweet on his Truth Social account, and appeared to concur with his son’s wish.

“We’re going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor. Very brave, he deserves it!”

The lifeguard has not been identified, but a woman claiming to be his mother posted on social media that his name is Ryder, according to Fox News.

Trump’s post came after a pair of closed-press meetings, first with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and then Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who are both in town for the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

Actor James Woods said he is worried the recent “Muslim invasion” of the USA will be the point where historians look back and say the country took a nosedive into hell.

He shared his concern about the rise of Islam during a Monday interview on right-wing pundit Benny Johnson’s show.

Woods — one of the few outspoken conservatives in Hollywood — said he believed the election of democratic socialist and Muslim Zohran Mamdani (D) as New York City’s mayor was “the most dangerous event” in modern American history. He said it signaled the downfall of the nation.

“Look, I think America is the greatest human endeavor in the history of humankind. I think it’s in terrible trouble. I mean, the city where the World Trade Center and the people in it were slaughtered and destroyed, how you could ever allow this Muslim invasion and cancer?” Woods asked.

“And they say, ‘What are you, prejudiced?’ Well, yes. I’m sorry to say it,” he continued.

Woods then told reporters watching the show,  “don’t keep [my last comment] if you quote it just that; I’m prejudiced against a religion — that’s really a political jihad — that actually has in its revered text that you will kill every non-believer.”

He continued:

You know, I’m a Catholic. I believe certain things. I don’t think certain other religions share my view, but they have a right to do it, this is America. And I’d say you have a right to do it anyway.

But you don’t have a right to practice something — I’m not going to sign up for “Team Muslim” or “Team Islam,” when Team Islam says “Oh, and by the way, we want to kill every one of you who’s not us.” Now you got a problem.

Johnson let Woods speak for a minute. He then pointed out some 9/11 families want Mamdani barred from the tribute later this year, honoring 25 years since nearly 3,000 people were murdered in the terrorist attack.

The Specialist star’s remarks on Islam come as the religion has quickly expanded in recent years. There were 2.6 million Muslims in America in 2010, which then jumped 32% over the next decade to 3.85 million.

Woods gave an ominous prediction for what will happen sooner or later in the States.

“They’re gonna kill us. They’re gonna outbreed us and kill us and it’s gonna be done,” he said. “Because they’re doing it in other places — Christians in Sudan and other places, they’re being slaughtered. They’re being eradicated.”

Ultrahuman rings, including the new Ring Pro, come with an extensive app. Even before you activate any PowerPlugs (add-on features), there are plenty of graphs and numbers to get lost in. Here are a few hacks you should know to navigate the data deluge and make sure you're getting the most out of its clever hidden features.

I've used two of Ultrahuman's rings: the Ring Air, which I reviewed here (and which is no longer available in the U.S.), and the Ring Pro, which I wrote about a little here. Ultrahuman just came out with a new version of its app, so if anything here looks different from what you're used to (like the Longevity tab), make sure you have the latest version.

Use the Ultrahuman ring's longevity tab, but not for longevity

Ultrahuman gives you an estimate of your biological age, which you may (correctly) think of as kind of a silly gimmick—but don't ignore the longevity tab altogether. It's actually a great summary of your long-term trends. If you think of the Ring tab as giving your day-to-day data and suggestions for what to do today, then the Longevity tab tells you what all those days have added up to.

This is where you'll find an estimate of your VO2max, which gauges your cardio fitness. You'll also see a card describing your sleep debt; mine tells me I'm one hour in debt, due to bedtimes creeping later over the past week, but it also tells me a few on-time bedtimes should wipe out the debt.

Get better heart rate accuracy in Ultrahuman ring workouts by using a different device

Smart rings don't make great workout trackers, as I've told you before. You have to take the ring off for comfort or safety for many workout types, and the heart rate readings aren't particularly reliable, even when you may want to keep the ring on.

Ultrahuman can track workouts with the ring, of course, but the app also has a setting that accounts for exactly my complaints. If you have another device, like a Garmin or even a basic chest strap heart rate monitor, you can have Ultrahuman use that more reliable device for your heart rate during workouts. Just start a workout from the app (under the plus sign menu), and you can choose another device. It actually works with anything that can broadcast heart rate and gives you instructions for connecting your Airpods Pro 3, Apple Watch, Polar sensor, Whoop, or Garmin.

"Train" your Ultrahuman ring for better accuracy

A new feature in the Emerald update is the ability to "train" your ring's heart rate detection algorithm. To use it, you'll wear a secondary device at the same time as your ring, and Ultrahuman will compare the signals it gets from the two devices. This is supposed to allow Ultrahuman to detect your heart rate more accurately.

So far, the feature is only available for a few specific Polar heart rate monitors, none of which I have on hand, so I haven't been able to test this yet. But Ultrahuman says that support for other devices, like Garmin, is coming soon. Training for step counting is also coming soon.

Keep an eye on sunlight with the vitamin D plugin (even if you don't care about your vitamin D)

One of Ultrahuman's strengths is that it keeps track of the best time to do certain things. By default, you'll get recommendations about when you should stop looking at screens for the night, and you'll also get a recommendation to get a certain number of steps during the early morning and "golden hour" (around sunset) timeframes. There's a similar timeline for what Ultrahuman thinks are your best times to have caffeine during the day.

But there's another handy timeline you can add: one that shows you the timing for sunlight. To see it, go to Powerplugs and activate the Vitamin D plugin. You can use this for its original function, of course: taking note of when you are outdoors and getting sunlight. The ring detects some sunlight on its own, and you can tell it when you've been outside if you're trying to rack up a certain amount of time in the sun.

Now, you'll get a line on your timeline showing when the sun rises and when you'll get "partial sunlight" in the evening, customized to your location. You can infer some of this timing from the circadian windows plugin, but I like having it in its own little column on the timeline. I find this handy for planning outdoor activities toward the end of the day—if I go out near the "partial sunlight" time, I should probably bring a flashlight if I'll be on the trail. To see all your timelines in parallel, tap on the Active Windows card on the main screen.

Save battery on your Ultrahuman ring with Chill Mode

One of Ultrahuman's most useful features is a simple battery-life setting that you won't find unless you go looking for it. When you first buy your ring, it will operate in Turbo Mode, which the app describes as running "all sensors at full intensity for continuous, all-day tracking." President Donald Trump said he wished the U.S. had a more beefed-up weapons stockpile than it does — which he said is a problem because ex-President Joe Biden “gave away” a grip of weapons to Ukraine.

The president was asked aboard Air Force One on Monday whether he was “concerned” about the stockpile as the Iran war goes on; ABC reporter Rachel Scott sounded like she asked the question.

Trump said he wasn’t worried, but he would have preferred Biden and Ukraine left him with more to work with.

“We have a lot of ammunition, different types. You know, Biden gave a lot to Ukraine, so we’re building that up. But we have a lot,” he said. “We have a lot of the mid-level stuff, too, I mean more than we could ever use no matter what. But we have a lot. I’d like to have more, to be honest, but so much was given to Ukraine by Biden.”

He continued, “When I left, the cupboards were full… as soon as I left, they gave a lot of it to Ukraine. I mean, numbers that nobody’s ever seen before.”

Trump said his administration is focused on building up the stockpile “very rapidly” and bragged defense contractors were each building four to five plants to produce weapons for the military.

“We’re in very good shape, but for some of the more sophisticated stuff, we’d certainly like to have more,” he added. “Biden gave a lot of it away.”

Trump’s answer comes a few weeks after he said the U.S. will show Ukraine how to build “elite” military weapons like the MM-104 Patriot missile defense system. He made the announcement while speaking to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at a NATO Summit in Turkey.

The president’s talk with reporters also came shortly after he told Axios he was ready for “strong military action” against Iran, if peace deal talks fizzle out once again.

Not since Happy Days spun off into Mork and Mindy has there been a weirder TV franchise expansion than Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, which takes the relatively straightforward sitcom antics of The Big Bang Theory and expands them into the multiverse. It seems that, at some point after the conclusion of their show, Howard, Sheldon, and Leonard built a quantum something-or-other machine that went haywire and triggered a multiversal apocalypse that only comic book guy Stuart (Kevin Sussman) can stop.

It's early days yet, but the HBO series is pretty fun, making the most of the parent show's geeky bona fides and affection for genre tropes. If you're looking for more entertainment in the same nerdy vein, here are other shows that inject varying degrees of comedy into serious sci-fi scenarios.

Sliders (1995 – 2000)

Though less overtly comedic, there's an appealing goofiness to this quintessentially '90s bit of sci-fi, a show that anticipates the multiversal mayhem of the modern Marvel era. Jerry O'Connell is Quinn Mallory, who accidentally opens a portal that sends him and a rotating group of companions (including, initially, John Rhys-Davies as Quinn's mentor) through the multiverse. The device that he invents to get them all home is, inconveniently, an unreliable timer that keeps them stuck wherever they land for...well, however much time the story demands. Over the course of their adventures, they visit worlds where the Soviet Union won the Cold War, where antibiotics were never invented, and where Hillary Clinton is president (I swear!). Future Man (2017 – 2020)

Josh Hutcherson plays Josh Futturman, a twenty-something janitor who lives with his parents and isn't good at much aside from video games. Though that's enough, as it turns out: He's the only person ever to finish the game Biotic Wars, a success that triggers the arrival of time-traveling soldiers from the future who recruit Josh for their war (yes, that's basically the plot of The Last Starfighter). The show succeeds by wearing its sci-fi influences on its sleeve, taking its world and backstory seriously before populating it with goofy, raunchy, and believably out-of-their-depth characters. Red Dwarf (1988 – 2020)

The subject here is outer-space sci-fi in the Star Trek mold, but it's still a beautifully irreverent sendup of the genre, with an amiable loser at its center. Craig Charles is Dave Lister, a well-meaning slob who holds the lowest job possible on the enormous mining ship Red Dwarf. When he sneaks a pregnant cat aboard, he's punished by being placed in suspension (without pay) for the rest of the trip. Which is a lot longer than anyone anticipated: When Dave wakes up, three million years have passed, and humanity is entirely extinct. The kittens survived and sired an inbred cat empire that's since risen and all but fallen, while the senile main computer has recreated Dave's hated roommate (Chris Barrie) as a hologram to keep him company. Legends of Tomorrow (2016 – 2022)

In a depressingly straight and self-serious superhero-media landscape, Legends of Tomorrow soared past its rocky origins as a dumping ground for supporting characters from other DC shows to become something altogether weirder (and queerer). Initially recruited by a time traveller for a mission specifically because of their insignificance (their absences from the timeline won't affect a thing), the Legends go from screwups to reluctant heroes under the leadership of Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), putting things right in time and space. Blending solid character work with brilliant goofiness, the show saw plotlines involving a giant animatronic bear threatening the Old West, a season-ending fight scene set to "The Thong Song," and a character's nipple getting bitten off by a unicorn. Resident Alien (2021 – 2025)

I feel like Resident Alien flew a bit under the radar during its run, though it still managed a solid four-season run. Alan Tudyk (Serenity, Rogue One, Superman) stars as Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle, sort of: He's actually an alien with an unpronounceable name who crashed on Earth before killing the real Harry and assuming his identity. He's meant to scout the planet for a planned destruction, but, by assuming human form and integrating with the community in the tiny town of Patience, Colorado, he slowly begins to have second thoughts, even as he continues to be entirely repulsed by human culture. Tudyk is genuinely funny while managing to hit some moving emotional beats along his journey to not-wanting-to-kill-us-all-quite-as-much, and the supporting cast is similarly game. The fictional setting is set near the real Southern Ute Reservation, and offers up some impressive Indigenous representation, including Sara Tomko as Harry's bestie and occasional foil, Asta Twelvetrees. The Librarians (2014 – 2018)

The Librarians began life as a charming, Indiana Jones-light TV movie led by Noah Wylie way back in 2004, which spawned two sequels, the series in question, as well as a sequel show now entering its second season. While largely a standalone take on the mildly comedic premise (a secret annex of the New York Public Library that catalogs magical and occult objects), The Librarians finds Rebecca Romjin, John Larroquette, and Christian Kane leading a group of action-scholars who use their brains to save the world. The Last Man on Earth (2015 – 2018)

The tone of this sensational series is wildly different than that of Stuart, and yet it would feel like a disservice to not mention this weird sci-fi apocalypse from Breaking Bad's Vince Gilligan, which displays a very dark, very dry sense of humor. Rhea Seehorn plays Carol Sturka, a fantasy romance author and general grouch who becomes one of only 13 people on the planet immune to the "Joining"—the result of an alien virus that transforms the rest of humanity into a peaceful, perky, and perpetually content hive mind. Carol refuses to surrender her miserableness in the face of a loss of identity, fighting instead to restore humanity to its admittedly cruddy ways. Saving the world means saving the world for snobby misanthropes like herself. Thrilling, heartbreaking, and genuinely funny, the show manages to address some big questions about what it means to be human, and what we'd be willing to give up to change. Twisted Metal (2023 – )

Based on the ‘90s-era vehicular combat games that your parents probably hated (involving, as they do, a lot of wild, demolition-derby style action in which you smash and/or blow up your opponents), Twisted Metal stars Anthony Mackie as John Doe, a driver tasked with carrying a package across the entirely lawless Wasteland while dodging challenges that include a murderous clown in an ice cream truck. Alternately brutal and goofy, the show mostly does what it says on the tin, providing plenty of frenetic car-on-car action (and car-on-semi, car-on-hearse, -ice cream truck, etc.). Now Apocalypse (2019)

New Queer Cinema pioneer Greg Araki followed up his neon-tinged cinematic apocalypse in Kaboom with Now Apocalypse, a successor in spirit. Avan Jogia plays Ulysses Zane, living in sun-soaked California with his best friend Carly (Kelli Berglund), a struggling actress and sex worker. He keeps having bizarre dreams about an alien invasion that feel increasingly like they might be premonitions, or possibly just anxiety delusions brought on by too much weed. The show only lasted one season and never quite made it to its own prophesied apocalypse, but it was definitely fun while it lasted, and definitely offers something a bit to the left of the typical dreary end-of-the-world.
