A top official for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) spelled out a jaw-dropping platform in a wild interview on Fox News — including calls to abolish the U.S. Senate and to defund the Pentagon.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, DSA co-chair Megan Romer was asked by anchor Shannon Bream about the DSA’s platform. One by one, Romer confirmed her support for various policy positions that are sure to draw the ire of conservatives and moderate Democrats.

BREAM: Abolish the Senate?

ROMER: True.

BREAM: OK, replace the presidency and Supreme Court as we now know them?

ROMER: Yep

BREAM: Abolish ICE?

ROMER: Absolutely.

BREAM: Abolish borders and give amnesty to anyone currently in the US illegally?

ROMER: As a long term plan, yep.

BREAM: Defund the Pentagon?

ROMER: Absolutely.

BREAM: Abolish prisons, at least in large part?

ROMER: Yeah, again, as part of a long term program, yeah?

BREAM: OK, so no prisons. Government or public ownership of most large corporations?

ROMER: Yeah, absolutely.

Bream proceeded to press Romer for specifics on why the DSA wants to do away with the Senate, and how exactly it would do so.

“The Senate is an anachronistic institution, it comes from the British House of Lords,” Romer said. “It is made to protect power for…the senate was part of the system that was made to make sure that the people didn’t have too much of a say. So we want to expand Congress significantly, but make it a unicameral legislature.”

Later, the Fox News anchor pressed Romer on the idea of abolishing prisons.

“If we talk about abolishing prisons then, does that make society better?” Bream said. “I mean, is there anybody that should be incarcerated? I mean rapists, child predators, murderers?”

Romer elaborated on the DSA’s position.

“So the long term plan when we think about most people who are in prison, they are mostly in prison for crimes of poverty,” Romer said.

“But that’s not who I’m talking about,” Bream interjected. “I’m talking about the murderers and rapists.”

“I hear you,” Romer said. “When we get rid of this need for crimes of poverty to exist, when we get rid of that destabilizing force that creates so many people who living in desperate situations and doing desperate things. That brings those numbers down to very small numbers, and then we can collectively decide what we do with those people. I suspect it won’t look like the prison system as we know it today.”

“OK, but you do think some people need to be away from society,” Bream said.

“Some people are not able to be functional members of society, that’s true,” Romer replied. “But what does that look like to keep the rest of us safe? We’re talking about safety, we’re not talking about punishment, we are talking about making sure that we are safe, everybody is safe, and everybody maintains their dignity.”

Many observers believe the DSA’s political influence is growing — as DSA-backed candidates have recently won a number of major Democratic primary victories in places including New York and Colorado.
