Author Salman Rushdie sat for his first televised interview since he was brutally attacked with a knife at a New York event in 2022.

Rushdie was put on a ventilator after the attack and he’s not lost sight in his right eye, among other injuries. He’s penned a new memoir, titled Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder, set for release on Tuesday.

Rushdie sat down with Anderson Cooper for a new 60 Minutes interview about the attack that will air in full on Sunday.

“One of the surgeons who had saved my life said to me, he said, ‘First, you were really unlucky and then you were really lucky.’ I said, ‘What’s the lucky part?'” Rushdie recalled in a preview of his sit-down with Cooper. “He said, ‘Well, the lucky part is that the man who attacked you had no idea how to kill a man with a knife.'”

Rushdie’s attacker, Hadi Matar, pleaded not guilty to his charges of assault and attempted murder.

Rushie became the target of Islamic extremists after the publication of his 1988 book The Satanic Verses over its fictionalization of the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Iran’s Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a 1989 fatwa on Rushdie, calling for the author’s death, leading him to go into hiding for years.

The trial of Matar was delayed in January after a New York judge ruled Matar’s legal team could have time to review Rushdie’s manuscript for Knife.
