GOP Rep Blasts Fellow Republicans Pushing to Oust Speaker Johnson: ‘I Don’t Know Who Would Want the Job at This Point’

By News Here - 12:08

Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) called out fellow Republicans pushing an effort to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), saying they would throw the House into “chaos.”

Armstrong joined MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Wednesday following Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) announcing that he would be backing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) motion to vacate Johnson. The speaker is facing the internal revolt as he’s pushing the House to pass additional funding to Ukraine and Israel.

Armstrong called Johnson a “friend” with the “toughest job in politics” and said he would not support a motion to vacate.

“I’m standing with the Speaker because I actually consider him a friend and I think he is trying to do the toughest job in politics and I think given all the circumstances, he’s doing it very admirably,” the Republican congressman said.

Johnson has dismissed concerns he could be pulled from his position like his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy.

“It is in my view an absurd notion that someone would bring a vacate motion when we are here simply trying to do our jobs. It is not helpful to the cause, it is not helpful to the country,” Johnson told reporters on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Armstrong urged his colleagues Massie and Greene to recall the weeks of chaos after McCarthy was ousted as House Speaker in October. The Republican lawmaker said there’s no real “succession plan” if Johnson is ousted and he doubts anyone would actually want the position.

“By throwing ourselves into chaos without having any kind of real succession plan — I mean, just to be honest, I don’t know who would want the job if this succeeds at this point,” he said.
