Sarah Longwell, Republican strategist and publisher of The Bulwark, warned the term “porn star” attached to Donald Trump’s upcoming criminal trial could cause voters to take the charges against him less seriously.

Trump’s “hush money” case is set to begin on Monday. He’s accused of falsifying business records after paying porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000 so she would keep quiet about their affair in the lead-up to the 2016 election.

“Well, first of all, there are so many cases against Donald Trump that for voters, a lot of this is white noise. They can’t really tell all of the cases apart,” Longwell said, continuing:

That being said, as they come into singular focus as he goes into trial, I’ve never liked this one going first because just the word ‘porn star,’ which you’re going to hear over and over again, is just the kind of thing that makes people laugh it off as not serious, even though this is about corporate checks being passed and trying to hide things before an election so it didn’t get out.

Even though that’s what it’s about, like, it’s the voters who are going to interpret this one more, I think, a little bit more through Trump’s frame as, “This is them trying to get me on something silly,” then they would something like the January 6 case or the documents case, where when they are taken singularly, seem more serious to voters than this one does.

Trump faces 34 felony counts in the case, in which each count carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

Trump remains under gag order in the case and cannot make public statements attacking witnesses, prosecutors, court staff, or their family members. The order was extended earlier this month to include Judge Juan Merchan’s family members and those of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Jury selection is set to begin Monday in the case. Judge Merchan has said he expects the trial to last between six and eight weeks, with the former president in attendance each day.
