Fmr. DHS Sec Trashes Trump’s Claim He’s a Law and Order Candidate: That’s ‘Like Me Saying I Play In The NBA’
Former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano slammed former President Donald Trump for claiming he is a law and order candidate.
The Republican nominee has used the phrase “law and order” dating back to the 2016 campaign against Hillary Clinton. In the aftermath of the killing of NYPD officer Jonathan Diller — whose wake the former president attended — Trump has tried to position himself as the law and order candidate in the 2024 race.
But Napolitano, who served under former President Barack Obama, vehemently objected to Trump’s critiques. Napolitano joined MSNBC host Jen Psaki for an interview on Sunday — mocking Trump for trying to run as a supporter of law enforcement.
First of all, for former President Trump to run as a so-called law and order candidate, it would be like me saying I play in the NBA. I mean, it just doesn’t hold true. So, look, there was a terrific spike in violent crime, really, during the end of the Trump presidency when we were in the midst of the Covid pandemic. But since then, crime has been coming down in some years, dramatically. So last year, 2023 saw the largest one year decrease in violent crime nationwide than we’ve had since around 1960. And so, to say that we are awash in violent crime, that it’s going up, etc., etc.. Look, never let the facts get in the way of rhetoric, I guess. But the facts are the facts.
