Actress Kirsten Dunst Accuses Media of ‘Forcing Us to Choose a Side’ Ahead of Movie About U.S. Civil War
Academy Award-nominated actress Kirsten Dunst is accusing the media of stoking U.S. divisions and forcing people to “choose a side” ahead of the release of her film entitled Civil War.
Civil War, from acclaimed writer/director Alex Garland, takes place in a United States barreling towards another Civil War, with separatist armies in California and Texas among other fractured pieces of the country as multiple states are seceding. Dunst plays Lee, one in a group of journalists caught up in the escalating chaos. The film releases on April 12 from A24.
The film previously premiered at South by Southwest and critics have been drawing comparisons between the dystopian world in the movie and our own modern political divisions headed into a presidential election.
Dunst denied any direct comparisons, including Nick Offerman’s president resembling Donald Trump or anyone else in an interview with Variety to promote the movie.
“I don’t want to compare because that’s the antithesis of the film. It’s just a fascist president. But I didn’t think about Nick’s character being any certain political figure. I just thought this is this president, in this world, who will not abide by the Constitution and democracy.”
Dunst, who said she’s voting for President Joe Biden in November, did acknowledge that the divisions in Civil War reflect our own, divisions she partly blames on the media.
“Media really stokes it big time,” she said. “The media is forcing us to choose a side. Everything’s a lot more complicated than that.”
Dunst may be supporting Biden, but as many Americans have expressed in polling results, she’s not enthused about the election or the presumptive major nominees being Biden and Trump again.
“Everything is broken,” she said. “Everything needs to be fixed.”
