Rep. Ritchie Torres slammed fellow Democrats Cori Bush and Rashida Tlaib over “reprehensible and repulsive” comments they made on the current conflict in Israel.

Hamas launched one of the deadliest attacks on Israel in decades on Saturday, a day after the anniversary of the Yom Kippur war and on a Jewish holiday, killing and kidnapping civilians, launching missile attacks, and committing an outright terror attack on a musical festival.

Both Tlaib and Bush, along with other members of the group referred to as “The Squad“, have come under fire before over accusations of anti-Semitism.

As the conflict unfolded over the weekend, Rep. Tlaib issued a statement referring to Israel as an “apartheid government” that created the “suffering” which led to the “resistance” by Hamas. Tlaib demanded the United States stop providing billions in “unconditional funding” to the key ally, and Rep. Bush released similar comments demanding the U.S. stop supporting Israel.

“I grieve the Palestinian and Israeli lives lost yesterday, today, and every day. I am determined as ever to fight for a just future where everyone can live in peace, without fear and with true freedom, equal rights, and human dignity,” Tlaib said. “The path to that future must include lifting the blockade, ending the occupation, and dismantling the apartheid system that creates the suffocating, dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance.”

Fellow Democrat Torres decried those characterizations and victim-blaming, and called for even more support of Israel by the United States.

“U.S. aid to Israel is and should be unconditional, and never more so than in this moment of critical need,” Torres said in a statement to Jewish Insider reporter Marc Rod. “Congress must act decisively to provide Israel with whatever it needs to defend itself in the face of unprecedented terrorism.”

President Joe Biden issued a statement hours after the conflict, calling the attack “appalling” and vowing to stand by Israel as an ally.

Meanwhile, Biden’s right-wing opponents have claimed his administration has emboldened or enabled the attack by Hamas because the White House directed $6 billion to Iran for humanitarian issues in a hostage deal earlier this summer, which funds are currently being held.
