Fox News national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin fact-checked claims that President Joe Biden’s administration provided $6 billion to Iran during a prisoner exchange earlier in the summer.

Some Republicans and right-wing pundits have claimed Iran used the $6 billion provided by the U.S. to help fund Hamas’ attack against Israel on Saturday, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people.

Former President Donald Trump said at a rally on Saturday that the hostage deal secured by the Biden administration was the catalyst for the attacks against Israel. In August, the White House agreed to free approximately $6 billion in frozen Iranian oil revenue funds in exchange for five American hostages held by Tehran.

The money could only be used for humanitarian purposed such as food and medicine and not have any military use. Griffin pointed out this fact during a segment on Fox News.

The $6 billion is still currently held in a Qatari bank account with U.S. Treasury oversight, I’m told. The money came from Iranian oil sales to South Korea and did not include U.S. taxpayer dollars. NK spokesperson Adrian Watson said in a statement, ‘Not a single cent from these funds has been spent and when it is spent it can only be spent on things like food and medicine for the Iranian people. These funds have absolutely nothing to do with the horrific attacks today, and this is not the time to spread disinformation.’ In fact, the US has pre-positioned $2 billion worth of weapons stored in Israel. I’m told the US will likely release some of these pre-positioned weapons to assist Israel in the coming days.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also made similar criticism against the Biden administration over its handling of Iran, claiming they “helped fund this war against Israel.”

“Iran has helped fund this war against Israel, and Joe Biden’s policies that have gone easy on Iran has helped to fill their coffers,” he said in a video posted to X. “Israel is now paying the price for those policies.”

However, several people have pointed out that Hamas doesn’t have to literally withdraw money from Iran’s ATM for the funds directed to Iran to play a role.
