Jim Jordan Pushing for Quick Floor Vote On Speaker Now That He’s the Favorite … After Stalling Just Days Ago When He Wasn’t

By News Here - 13:08

Multiple outlets are reporting that Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), the current favorite to become House Speaker, is pushing for a quick floor vote to build momentum for his candidacy. But the Ohio Congressman was not in favor of a rushed floor vote back when his colleague, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), was in line for the job.

According to CNN, Punchbowl News and others, Jordan is pressing for a floor vote in order to put his House Republican colleagues on the record. CNN’s Manu Raju reports a senior House Republican told him at least 20 members of the caucus are a “hard no” on Jordan, and Punchbowl’s Jake Sherman reports as many as 55 won’t vote for the Ohio congressman.

Still, Jordan wants the public to see where things stand.

“Jordan is intent on putting [people] on the record per sources,” said Sherman on X — the platform previously known as Twitter.”

But that was not Jordan’s position as recently as 10 days ago — when he told Sean Hannity that he thought House Republicans should already have a Speaker chosen before they proceed to the floor, citing the drama surrounding the Speaker election back in January, when Rep. Kevin McCarthy needed 15 votes in order to claim the job.

“We shouldn’t go to the House floor until we have 218 votes for the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives,” Jordan said. “We shouldn’t have to go through what we did back in January.”

Notably, Jordan was considered an underdog at the time to Scalise — who, days later, won a narrow majority in a closed-door vote among House Republicans.
