Marjorie Taylor Greene Calls on Republicans Who Ousted McCarthy and ‘Put Us Here’ to Apologize, Let Go of ‘Egos’
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called on the House Republicans who joined forces with the Democratic caucus to eject former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to apologize during a fiery hallway interview in the Capitol complex on Thursday.
Greene opposes the plan of Republican leadership to vote to empower Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-SC) after Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) candidacies flamed out, and blamed the “egos” of certain members for bringing the conference to this point.
“I do not support this plan. Republican voters work too hard to give us the majority for us to enter some sort of temporary speakership,” said Greene. “Our conference has a responsibility to the American people, to our districts, to work together and unify, and this conference is absolutely broken.”
“I think that’s the wrong thing to do,” declared Greene after acknowledging that Jordan is backing the measure to empower McHenry. “He [Jordan] wants to do that while he continues talking to people and finding a path.”
She continued:
I completely disagree. I think that we should all be able to find a path in that room right there. And that requires putting the egos down. It requires humility. It requires the 8 Republicans that worked with Democrats to put us here asking for forgiveness in the conference and people giving forgiveness and us moving forward. This is not a plan for a strong majority.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), the ringleader of the small group of Republicans who voted to oust McCarthy, also expressed his opposition to the resolution empowering McHenry on Thursday, although he showed no signs of offering the apology Greene is calling for.
“I believe it is a constitutional desecration to not elect a Speaker of the House. We need to stay here until we elect a speaker,” said Gaetz. “And if someone can’t get the votes, we need to go on to the next person. But twisting and torturing the Constitution to empower a temporary speaker is having a speaker-lite. That is not constitutionally contemplated, it is deeply infirm, and I will do everything possible to stop it.”
