CNN’s Dana Bash was visibly disgusted when she recounted a recent interview former President Donald Trump gave to right-wing media about the migrant crisis at the southern border.

Following a discussion on President Joe Biden’s border wall policy, Bash said, “Now to something Donald Trump said on this topic this week. In an interview, the former president borrowed from white nationalists when he said this to National Pulse, a right-wing news outlet.”

She then rolled tape on the former president:

Nobody has ever seen anything like what we’re witnessing right now. It is a very sad thing for our country. It’s poisoning the blood of our country. It’s so bad, and people are coming in with disease, people are coming in with every possible thing that you can have.

“Here is what we heard from the Anti-Defamation League, which released a scathing statement, saying in part, ‘Insinuating that immigrants are, quote, ‘poisoning the blood of our country’ echoes nativist talking points and has the potential to cause real danger and violence,'” Bash said.

The New York Times’ Trip Gabriel said the former president’s comments used “language with echoes of white supremacy and the racial hatreds of Adolf Hitler.”

The Times gave credit to MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan for unearthing the interview, which was posted online last week.

“I had missed this: among the many crazy and offensive Trump statements in recent days, he also told a right-wing website that undocumented immigrants are ‘poisoning the blood of our country,’ which is a straight-up white supremacist/neo-Nazi talking point,” Hasan tweeted on Wednesday.

According to The Times, “A spokesman for Mr. Trump, Steven Cheung, called the former president’s comment ‘a normal phrase that is used in everyday life.’ He added, ‘For anyone to think that is racist or xenophobic is living in an alternate reality consumed with nonsensical outrage.’”
