Laura Ingraham: Neil Armstrong Biopic Leaving Out American Flag is ‘Another Way of Trashing Patriotism’

On Friday night, Laura Ingraham sounded off on the controversy surrounding the upcoming Neil Armstrong biopic First Man.

The film, starring Ryan Gosling as the iconic astronaut, premiered this week at the Venice Film Festival. And while it has received rave reviews and a ton of Oscar buzz, the film leaves out the American flag being planted onto the moon, which has sparked some outrage.

Gosling defended the creative decision by saying the following:

“I think this was widely regarded in the end as a human achievement [and] that’s how we chose to view it. I also think Neil was extremely humble, as were many of these astronauts, and time and time again he deferred the focus from himself to the 400,000 people who made the mission possible. He was reminding everyone that he was just the tip of the iceberg – and that’s not just to be humble, that’s also true. So I don’t think that Neil viewed himself as an American hero. From my interviews with his family and people that knew him, it was quite the opposite. And we wanted the film to reflect Neil.”

Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo expressed his confusion how planting the American flag on the moon “contradicts” Armstrong being a “humble hero.”

“It’s another way of trashing patriotism,” Ingraham reacted. “It’s another way of moving beyond the nationalism or nationalistic spirit, fervor of the moment.”

Arroyo added that the outrage over the flag has already launched a boycott movement against the film.
