Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic-Socialist candidate who shocked the political world with his likely win in the Democratic primary in the New York City mayor’s race, told Meet the Press Sunday that he does not believe the U.S. should have billionaires.

In an interview on Sunday, NBC’s Kristen Welker questioned Mamdani about policy stances which have caused many in the business community to panic. But Mamdani believes his policies will ultimately benefit New Yorkers in all economic categories.

“I want to make clear that my vision for this city is a vision for every single New Yorker, including business leaders across the city,” Mamdani said. “And the reason I say that is that my proposals, even the ones to increase the top corporate tax rate of New York to match that of New Jersey, are ones that would also benefit those business leaders. Because when I have conversations with them what I also hear is just how expensive this city is is preventing them from attracting and retaining the talent they need to grow their business. And ultimately, I’m looking forward to having those meetings, having those sitdowns to make clear why this vision would benefit all.

Welker pressed the mayoral candidate — who took a big step towards winning the job last week — about the fact that he identifies as a Democratic-Socialist.

“Do you think that billionaires have a right to exist?” Welker asked.

Mamdani laughed at the question, but ultimately replied: “I don’t think that we should have billionaires.”

The mayoral candidate added, “Frankly, it is so much money in a moment of such inequality, and ultimately, what we need more of is equality across our city and across our state and across our country. And I look forward to work with everyone, including billionaires, to make a city that is fairer for all of them.”
