MSNBC’s Witt Wonders if Warning #NoKings Protesters Away Will ‘Haunt’ MN Police: ‘Will Just Bottle Up Their Aggravation’

MSNBC’s Alex Witt questioned whether Minnesota police urging residents to stay away from anti-Trump protests following two lawmakers being shot will “come back to haunt them,” suggesting that protesters may just become even more aggravated by bottling-up their frustrations.

Witt’s question, and her guest’s answer, come just after major protests in Los Angeles that resulted in violence, destruction of property, and clashes with police.

“Given the targeted shootings of state lawmakers overnight, we are asking the public to not attend today’s planned demonstrations across Minnesota out of an abundance of caution,” Minnesota State Patrol said in a statement following the targeted shootings of Democratic State Sen. John Hoffman of Champlin and Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman in Brooklyn Park.

Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, are in stable condition after being shot, while Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed. A still-at-large suspect posed as a police officer to gain access to the lawmakers’ homes.

Police released a photo from the suspect’s car — which police are in possession of after the suspect fled Hortman’s home — which included flyers for Saturday’s “No Kings” protest. The demonstrations are taking place in a number of cities at the same time as the massive military parade in Washington, D.C.

“You have not only the governor, but Minnesota State Police saying, look, we don’t want people going out to these demonstrations, these ‘No Kings’ planned demonstration out of a precaution for safety. That said, it for some will just bottle up inside, their aggravation and their frustration. Do you worry that that can come back to haunt them down the road?” Witt asked retired FBI agent Rob D’Amico on Saturday.

D’Amico argued the decision could lead to “pent up anger.”

“Like you said, if now, especially with the unknown circumstances around these these murders, that you are not allowed to go out there when you thought you were, can then, you know, pent up that anger more. And then that’s dangerous,” he said.

D’Amico stressed that police will need to find common links between names in the suspect’s “manifesto” because the politics may not be obvious. A suspect was identified as Vance Luther Boelter, a 57-year-old man who previously was named to the Governor’s Workforce Development Board as a business member under Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D).

“I think they really have to look at what’s in common with all of them because it could be something that we’re looking at differently but all those politicians on there may have voted one way on some type of bill they may have done something it may be something that we are not seeing and those those flyers were in there for a different reason so it’s always as an investigator you have to keep your eyes open,” D’Amico said.
