President Donald Trump said Saturday that he had about an hour-long phone call with Russian president Vladimir Putin, during which they discussed wars abroad, and he told the Russian leader “his war” in Ukraine should end.

Trump posted on his Truth Social app on Saturday that Putin “very nicely” called him on Saturday morning to wish him a happy birthday. Trump turned 79 on Saturday.

He said that during the call, which lasted about an hour, the two talked about Iran and Israel a lot, and the Russia–Ukraine war “much less.”

President Putin called this morning to very nicely wish me a Happy Birthday, but to more importantly, talk about Iran, a country he knows very well,” he wrote. “We talked at length. Much less time was spent talking about Russia/Ukraine, but that will be for next week.”

“He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end,” said Trump in the Truth Social post.

But he added that he replied to Putin’s comments about the Israel and Iran war, saying “I explained, his war should also end.”

On that call, Trump also told Putin that White House envoy Steve Witkoff is prepared to resume the talks with Iran about the country’s nuclear program.

The White House put out a call summary on Saturday:

Today, President Trump and President Putin spoke about the need for peace and a ceasefire in the Ukraine war. Both leaders agreed this conflict needs to end with a lasting peace. They also stressed the need for improved bilateral relations between the United States and Russia. The blood and treasure that both Ukraine and Russia have been spending in this war would be better spent on the needs of their people.

This conflict should never have started and should have been ended long ago with sincere and good faith peace efforts. The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace. These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East.

The Kremlin put out a much longer statement, discussing many specific details, and referencing the conversations about Iran and Israel.

“Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump also touched upon other issues on the international agenda, including the situation in the Middle East and the Red Sea region,” the statement said. “Joint efforts will be made to stabilize the situation in crisis areas, establish cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation and global security. This, in turn, will contribute to improving the overall atmosphere of Russian-American relations.”
