A House Republican posted and deleted a tweet complaining about a Muslim man giving the House prayer on Friday — but he wasn’t even Muslim.
Friday morning, Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) sent a tweet raging about the presence of someone she thought was Muslim leading the House of Representatives in prayer. It read as follows:
It’s deeply troubling that a Muslim was allowed to lead prayer in the House of Representatives this morning. This should have never been allowed to happen.
America was founded as a Christian nation, and I believe our government should reflect that truth, not drift further from it. May God have mercy.
The individual in question, according to reporting by Axios, was Giani Singh from New Jersey. Singh is a Sikh Granthi, not a Muslim.
Miller first tried to correct the mistake by editing the tweet and replacing the word “Muslim” with “Sikh.” Eventually, she decided on deleting it altogether.
The tweet caught the attention of Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who managed to get a screenshot before Miller deleted it.
“They’re not just mean…They’re fucking morons,” Swalwell wrote. “This visiting chaplain is Sikh.”
Sikh Coalition, a community-based organization, took to social media to demand an apology from the congresswoman:
Such hateful rhetoric is not new to our community; it is as tired as it is unacceptable. Despite this, Sikhs will not be deterred from participating in public or civic life. Our community has a long history in IL, including in the district that Rep. Miller represents.
To be clear, deleting the tweet is not enough. Congresswoman Miller should apologize for her remarks—to both the Sikh and Muslim communities, because no one should be targeted on the basis of their identity.
