Several Israeli cities were hit with direct impacts from Iranian missiles in the early morning hours of Thursday after Iran launched some 30 ballistic missiles at the country. Warheads hit a hospital in the southern city of Beersheba, while the Diamond District of Ramat Gan and residential Holon, both suburbs of Tel Aviv, were hit. At least 240 people were injured, six severely, as the scale of the destruction was immediately evident in the apocalyptic scenes following the strikes.

Soroka Medical Center, along with most hospitals in Israel, has emergency protocols in place, which resulted in no fatalities as the building suffered major damage. Eli Bin, the head of Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service, told The Times of Israel that a part of the hospital that was damaged in the attack had been evacuated just the day before. “Many lives were saved,” Bin added.

The Israeli Defense Force’s Home Front Command confirmed on Thursday that at least one of the ballistic missiles carried fragmenting cluster munitions, designed to cause widespread, indiscriminate destruction. The Iranian warhead split into some 20 smaller munitions at an altitude of 7 kilometers, creating a larger blast radius on the ground of some 8 kilometers, according to the IDF.

One of the smaller munitions hit a home in the town of Azor, also in suburban Tel Aviv, causing minor damage. The cluster bomb attack led to the Home Front Command urging residents to avoid the blast area out of concern that some of the munitions may not have yet detonated. In 2008, 108 countries signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) to ban the weapons — Iran, Israel, and the United States did not sign the treaty.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran began with preemptive Israeli military strikes on Iranian nuclear and missile sites late last week. Israel continued to pound Iranian targets on Thursday, including Iran’s “inactive” Arak nuclear facility. The White House on Thursday said President Donald Trump would make his decision on whether or not to directly strike Iran in the next two weeks, as speculation of the U.S. joining the war continues to ramp up.
