President Joe Biden pushed back when EWTN White House correspondent Owen Jensen — a relatively frequent adversary of Biden and the White House on the issue of abortion rights —  asked him about IVF, citing Catholic doctrine calling it “immoral and wrong.”

The Alabama Supreme Court unleashed political hell recently with a decision ruling that embryos frozen for IVF treatments are actual children, and destroying them can be considered wrongful death. Many Republicans, including Trump, have rushed to distance themselves from what has turned out to be a shockingly unpopular decision.

But many influential voices in the pro-life movement oppose IVF and consider it “immoral” or worse, including the Catholic Church.

On Thursday, President Biden answered questions briefly as he departed for Brownsville, Texas, speaking to reporters about the Israel-Hamas war.

At the tail end, Jensen asked Biden — a devout Catholic who nonetheless keeps his personal beliefs separate from policy on reproductive rights — about the morality of IVF:

Q Do you expect a ceasefire by Monday, sir? Do you still expect a ceasefire is possible by Monday, sir?

THE PRESIDENT: Hope springs eternal.

Q And what is —

THE PRESIDENT: I was on the telephone with the people in the region. I’m still — probably not by Monday, but I’m hopeful.

(Cross-talk.)

Q What is your reaction (inaudible) in Gaza City? More than a hundred civilians were killed.

THE PRESIDENT: I just — we’re checking that out right now. But two — there’s two competing versions of what happened. I don’t have an answer yet.

Q Are you worried that will complicate these negotiations?

THE PRESIDENT: I know it will.

OWEN JENSEN: Mr. President, the Alabama ruling. I want to ask you about the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church said that IVF is immoral and wrong because it destroys countless human embryos. What do you say to that?

THE PRESIDENT: I don’t agree with that position.
