Colbert Gets Legal Notice From Lady Hanbury For Prince William ‘Affair’ Joke Prior To Kate’s Cancer News
Stephen Colbert was sent a notice threatening legal action by attorneys representing Lady Rose Hanbury over jokes the late night comedian recently made based on allegations that she and Prince William had an affair – a rumor that first surfaced in 2019.
According to reports from InTouch and other outlets, Colbert’s quips on the March 12 episode of The Late Show, more than a week before Katherine, Princess of Wales announced she was being treated for cancer, are the object of the legal notice. Hanbury and her attorneys say the claims are false and that it was Colbert who brought the story back into the spotlight.
On the show, Colbert said:
The kingdom has been all a flutter by the seeming disappearance of Kate Middleton. Well now, internet sleuths are guessing that Kate’s absence may be related to her husband and the future King of England, William, having an affair. So, I think we all know who the alleged other woman is. Say it with me — the Marchioness of Cholmondeley — what a beautiful name!”
Now, there have been rumors [of] an affair between William and the Marching Band of Chicanery since 2019.
According to tabloids back then, when Kate supposedly confronted him about it, he laughed it off, saying there was nothing to it. Always a good response when your wife accuses you of cheating. “Ha ha, imagine me having an affair! It is to laugh.”
InTouch reported that attorneys for Sarah Rose Hanbury, whose official title is the Marchioness of Cholmondeley, sent Colbert a letter, denying any affair between their client and Prince William, who is a neighbor and friend of the family.
Hanbury’s lawyers told In Touch that it was Colbert’s jokes that brought the rumors back into circulation in the media, and they are now forced to counter it.
The rumor appears to have entered into the mainstream media recently as a result of another joke made about it on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. We have written on our client’s behalf to CBS and various other reputable media organisations to confirm that the allegation is false.
According to The New York Post, William and Kate “have been pals with Hanbury and her husband, David Cholmondeley, for years, with their son Oliver acting as a page of honor at King Charles’ coronation in May 2023.”
In a statement to Business Insider on March 16, Hanbury maintained, “The rumours are completely false.”
Middleton released a video announcement Friday saying she was in “the early stages” of treatment for an undisclosed cancer found during “major abdominal surgery.”
Her absence from royal duties reignited affair rumors and launched widespread speculation as to her whereabouts. Middleton said she wanted to tell her children during their spring break before going public.
