Retired NFL punter Dustin Colquitt recently shared details about a conversation he had with Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid about the importance of having a big butt in the NFL.

In a report from The Athletic published Thursday, reporter Josh Kendall examined the correlation between NFL performance and the size of players’ butts. Although the notion may seem bizarre at first, it’s been a crucial part of the scouting process for decades. Within some circles, the term “high butt factor” — or “HBF” — is noted in scouting reports.

In fact, VCU assistant professor Dr. Alexandra DeJong Lempke told The Athletic that explosive movements are “primarily driven” from the glutes, meaning a bigger muscles in that area will produce more power.

That isn’t just limited to positions like lineman or running back, though. When Colquitt was a member of the Chiefs, he recalled Reid stressing the importance of punters also building those lower muscles.

“He’d sit down with me and be like, ‘You went to the Pro Bowl, and we don’t have much to say to you,'” Colquitt said. “‘But don’t lose your butt. Punters have to have big butts. As soon as you start to look like you’re going downhill from a physique standpoint, you’re out of here. Keep that ass going.”
