Peter Navarro, former White House trade adviser under then-President Donald Trump, has just over a week of freedom left before he begins serving time for his contempt of Congress conviction.

In September, Navarro failed to comply with a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.

CNN’s Sara Sidner reported the breaking news:

Ex-Trump adviser Peter Navarro has been ordered to report to a Miami prison on March 19, according to Navarro’s attorney who filed that information in court filing, Navarro was handed a four-month prison sentence for contempt of Congress in September. He was accused of not complying with a subpoena from the House Select Committee that investigated the January 6 insurrection. Navarro has been trying to avoid reporting to prison while his appeal plays out, but so far, his efforts have failed.

“Dr. Navarro has now been ordered to report to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons, FCI Miami, on or before 2:00PM EDT on March 19, 2024,” Navarro’s attorneys said in a court filing.

The federal prison where he’ll serve his time is a low-security facility in Florida, CNN reported.

The DC Circuit Court of Appeals is weighing Navarro’s claim that US District Judge Amit P. Mehta was wrong to deny him an executive privilege defense at trial.

Navarro released a statement Monday:

United States v. Peter Navarro is a landmark constitutional case that will eventually determine whether the constitutional separation of powers is preserved, whether executive privilege will continue to exist as a bulwark against partisan attacks by the legislative branch, and whether executive privilege will remain, as President George Washington pioneered, a critical instrument of effective presidential decision-making. That’s worth fighting for on behalf of all Americans.

Navarro widely promoted Trump’s false claims of mass voter fraud in the 2020 election.
