Clay Travis, founder of OutKick and a co-host of The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show, claimed his success in conservative media is the reason why he is being audited by the IRS. But mostly, he believed it was a sign that President Joe Biden was out to get him.

Travis revealed the audit notice on The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show on Friday, telling co-host Buck Sexton:

I haven’t inherited some massive sum of money that’s making my tax returns complicated. And so I don’t think that there’s any way that this is coincidental. I’ve been doing talk radio for 15 years. I’ve been in the media, primarily sports media, for a long time, and over the last decade or so I started to make pretty good money … So it’s not like this is the first time where I’ve never turned in a tax return and had to pay a lot of taxes. And I have paid a lot of taxes.

Travis also posted on Twitter/X the same day that when he started his right-wing radio show “in the Rush Limbaugh time slot,” “they” told him to “expect the IRS to audit you every year there’s a Democrat in office,” adding: “The Biden administration is the most corrupt in our lives.”

He followed that tweet up with another claiming that Hunter Biden “still hasn’t been charged” for his own tax evasion, but that is 1. not true and 2. not comparable because Biden pleaded guilty to two tax charges and repaid what he owed — in almost exactly the same deal struck by Roger Stone, an ally of former President Donald Trump. While the plea deal for the tax charges fell apart, Hunter Biden was indicted in September on three gun charges.

There are many reasons why Travis could have been audited, but his claim to be targeted by a Democratic president for having a conservative radio show might not be supported by evidence but it does likely ring true enough for a significant portion of his audience.
