George Santos Bristles When Confronted on CNN About His Fabricated Life Story: ‘Nobody Elected Me Because I Played Volleyball’
New York Republican Rep. George Santos shrugged off potential blowback when questioned Sunday on whether voters can trust him after all of the lies he’s told about his life.
On CNN’s Inside Politics, anchor Manu Raju aired his full interview with Santos just days after the congressman survived a House resolution calling for his expulsion.
Santos complained that his detractors want to “obsess” over his self-admitted “mistakes,” but as Raju defended the line of questioning, Santos turned to one of the most frequently-mocked portions of his false biography.
Nobody elected me because I played volleyball or not. Nobody elected me because I graduated college. People elected me because I said I came here to fight the Swamp. I’ve come here to lower inflation, create more jobs, and make life more affordable and the commitment to America. That is why people voted for anybody. To say that the voted based on anyone’s biography, I can bank you this: nobody knew my biography. Nobody opened my biography who voted for me in the campaign.
When Raju kept up the pressure in asking “why” Santos fabricated so much about his life, he attributed it to “insecurity and stupidity — I don’t know.”
“I’m human,” he said. “We make mistakes. I’ve apologized and I will continue to apologize profusely for this and with remorse. I’m the first one to jump and say ‘I messed up.'”
