‘Waking Up In A Pool Of Blood’: Paul Pelosi Remembers Home Hammer Attack In Harrowing Testimony
While testifying in federal court this week, Paul Pelosi recounted the harrowing details of being attacked in his own home with a hammer, saying that at one point all he remembered was “waking up in a pool of blood.”
Forty-three year old David DePape, whom authorities described as a far-right conspiracy theorist, is standing trial for the attack on the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), charged with attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. He has pleaded not guilty.
According to The Washington Post, Paul Pelosi, 83, told the jury, “It was a tremendous shock to recognize that somebody had broken into the house. And looking at him and looking at the hammer and the ties, I recognized that I was in serious danger.”
Pelosi continued that he “tried to stay as calm as possible,” as DePape asked, “Where’s Nancy?”
“She’s in Washington,” Pelosi answered.
DePape then said, “I’m going to have to tie you up and we’ll wait for her.”
Pelosi said that he tried to escape the bedroom but DePape blocked his way out.
“I went back in and sat on the bed, and we had some conversation about him saying that she was the leader of the pack, he had to take her out,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi told the jury that he was able to get a hold of his phone to dial 9-1-1 and tell the dispatcher, “there was this very large man there threatening me.”
Pelosi said he managed to talk DePape into going downstairs, saying, “You can tie me up there and we can go to sleep.”
He told the jury, “My only shot was going to be if we were downstairs when the police came; it would be so much easier to arrest him.” The Post continued:
The two men were at the bottom of the stairs when two San Francisco police officers arrived and one knocked on the front door. Pelosi opened the door. Police body-cam footage that prosecutors played for jurors in slow motion on Monday shows DePape striking Pelosi three times on the top of the head with the hammer before the officers tackled him.
“What was the next thing you remember?” Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Vartain Horn asked Pelosi.
“Waking up in a pool of blood,” he replied.
According to The Post, “Pelosi suffered a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands” that required stitches.
Closing arguments are set to wrap up Wednesday.
