Chris Wallace: Comey’s Firing Led to Special Counsel, So Only Person Trump Can Blame Is Himself

By News Here - 00:02

President Donald Trump has publicly and privately groused about Jeff Sessions‘ recusal causing so many problems for him. Fox News’ Chris Wallace said he also has himself to blame too.

In an interview yesterday with Bloomberg, the President had this to say about his embattled attorney general:

President Donald Trump said Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s job is safe at least until the midterm elections in November…

“I just would love to have him do a great job,” Trump said Thursday in an Oval Office interview with Bloomberg News. Asked if he’d keep Sessions beyond November, he declined to comment. “I’d love to have him look at the other side,” he said, reiterating calls for Sessions’s Justice Department to investigate Democrat Hillary Clinton and the origins of the Russia probe.

So Sessions won’t be fired, at least for now.

Wallace told Trace Gallagher this afternoon Sessions has clearly been a “punching bag” for Trump for a while now, so perhaps getting a small “reprieve” may come as temporary relief.

He also made a point of noting a new poll showing that not only is Trump’s disapproval rating the highest it’s ever been, but most Americans believe the Mueller investigation should be seen out to the end.

But he also made this point about Trump’s continued attacks on his own AG:

“Obviously the decision in the spring of 2017 to recuse himself and everything that has flowed from that has made a big difference. Remember, though, that the recusal of Sessions did not lead to the special counsel. It was the firing of Comey, of James Comey the FBI director, that led to the appointment of a special counsel, and the only person the President can blame for that is himself.”
