‘This Isn’t Great’: CNN Reporter Says Hunter Biden Seeking US Help on Burisma Deal ‘Feels Very Strange’

CNN senior reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere called news that Hunter Biden was seeking help from the State Department with the energy company Burisma “very strange.”

The New York Times on Tuesday reported that Hunter Biden sought the help of the U.S. government for a deal with the Ukrainian company Burisma while his father, President Joe Biden, was serving as vice president. Hunter Biden’s foreign business deals have long been investigated by Republicans who have accused the president of being directly involved with these deals while serving in office.

“This isn’t great,” Dovere said about the potential blowback to Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign. “Hunter Biden, everybody in the White House has known for a long time, is an issue. The way that his lawyers responded to this disclosure saying, ‘Well, yeah, he sent letters but did nothing wrong.’ This feels very strange to people that the vice president‘s son was sending letters or making requests to other government officials and saying, ‘Hey, would you meet with this company?'”

Dovere added that the communications Hunter Biden made suggested he was leveraging his last name.

“It does look like he was at least making people say, you notice my last name though, right?” he said.

CNN’s Kasie Hunt noted that the Hunter Biden documents dropped the same week Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid, but added that the Times called it a “coincidence.”

Republican strategist Matt Gorman said the Hunter Biden news “doesn’t look good,” but argued Joe Biden no longer being at the top of the ticket means Democrats are breathing a sigh of relief.

The Times reported:

The records, which the Biden administration had withheld for years, indicate that Hunter Biden wrote at least one letter to the U.S. ambassador to Italy in 2016 seeking assistance for the Ukrainian gas company Burisma, where he was a board member.

Embassy officials appear to have been uneasy with the request from the son of the sitting vice president on behalf of a foreign company.

“I want to be careful about promising too much,” wrote a Commerce Department official based in the U.S. Embassy in Rome who was tasked with responding.

“He is still facing trial later this year for tax evasion around Burisma. And look, I think it’s one of the many reasons Democrats are probably breathing a big sigh of relief,” he said. “They don’t have to worry about Hunter Biden in terms of presidential campaign trail politics, but you‘re right, this is the background of this. And this certainly, he‘s not going away anytime soon.”
