Rep. Ayanna Pressley⁩ (D-MA) described former President Donald Trump as “an existential threat” to Americans on Saturday, just three weeks after he was injured by the bullet of a would-be assassin in Pennsylvania.

In the aftermath of the shooting, there were calls to cool down the national temperature and to tone down the rhetoric. Those calls were ultimately short-lived on both sides of the aisle as campaign season mostly returned to previous talking points and rhetoric.

On MSNBC’s The Katie Phang Show Saturday, Pressley said Trump poses a “threat” to the continued existence of every person who lives in the United States.

Host Katie Phang asked Pressley about comments Trump made in Chicago earlier this week in which he questioned Vice President Kamala Harris’s ethnicity.

While speaking to the National Association of Black Journalists, Trump incited outrage when he said, “I didn’t know [Harris] was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?”

Phang aired a clip of the remark and asked Pressley, “How does this not totally alienate not only minorities, not just Blacks by the way – let’s be clear – minorities, as well as women?” Pressley responded:

Well, it’s deeply offensive but predictable. It’s a play from a tired handbook but they are desperate. Kamala Harris has been a woman of color her entire life, these trafficking in racist tropes and sexist tropes and misogynoir, that’s no new experience for her, and so, we are going to keep doing what we need to do to build this broad and diverse coalition to ensure that we are successful in November.

Donald Trump, just like Kamala Harris has always been a woman of color, he’s always been a bigot and a racist, discriminating against Black tenants as a landlord, calling for the death penalty for the Central Park Five, I could go on. He is an existential threat to every person that calls this country home.”
