CNN’s Alyssa Farah Griffin Says ‘Dumpster Fire’ Presser and Focus On Crowd Size Shows Ex-Boss Trump is ‘Spiraling’
CNN political commentator Alyssa Farah Griffin said her ex-boss Donald Trump’s Thursday press conference shows he’s “spiraling.”
Griffin, a former communications official in Trump’s administration and now a co-host on The View, joined CNN’s Kate Bolduan and Bakari Sellers for a panel discussion on Trump’s press conference the day prior where he predicted a “1929-variety” economic depression and a world war if he is not elected.
The former president also received backlash for dodging a question on abortion and for an eyebrow-raising comment where he claimed he drew a bigger crowd on Jan. 6, 2021 — just before the Capitol riot — than Martin Luther King Jr. Available estimates put King Jr.’s crowd at about five times the size of Trump’s.
Griffin called it a “dumpster fire press conference,” particularly criticizing the president for downplaying what an issue abortion will be in the coming election.
“This was an absolute dumpster fire of a press conference, to be clear, but I think it’s the if you say it, it may be so. He knows it’s a huge issue. Donald Trump’s actually been ahead of most Republicans in realizing what a major vulnerability it is for Republicans,” she said.
Griffin argued Trump and his campaign are struggling with a message because Trump doesn’t know how to run against a “celebrity candidate” like Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Donald Trump’s triggered because he’s actually running against a candidate for once who is the celebrity candidate, the one that pop culture is following. That was him against Hillary Clinton in 2016. He was sort of this outsider, you know, hosting SNL,” she said. “Now he’s got someone who has [Barack] Obama-level momentum and is pulling huge crowds and he doesn’t know how to attack her.”
The former Trump administration official has questioned her ex-boss’s stamina recently, arguing he’s “slowing down.” She told Bolduan on Friday that the press conference shows he’s “spiraling.”
“They can’t land a message against Kamala Harris. It’s frankly not that hard. Say she’s Joe Biden, but more liberal. If you don’t like Biden policies, don’t vote for her,” she said. “But instead he’s flailing. I mean, talking about crowd sizes is just an absolute example that he’s spiraling, his advisors don’t have control over his message, and he doesn’t know what he wants to say.”
