After a harsh exchange of words last month, President Donald Trump demanded an apology from Gov. Janet Mills of Maine, a Democrat, for making what he called “an unlawful challenge to the Federal Government” over over transgender athlete policy in her state.

In February, Trump and Mills traded jabs after he singled her out over his executive order on transgender sports at the televised meeting with governors of various states. During the brief exchange Mills threatened “see you in court” and Trump replied, “You better do it because you’re not going to get federal funding.”

Trump repeated his comments later that day at the Republican Governor’s Association meeting, and the next day at CPAC he brought up Mills and funding again. An investigation into Maine on the matter soon followed, and in March funding from the Department of Agriculture was put on “pause” over the issue.

Maine’s Universities backed down this week, agreeing to comply with Trump’s executive order.

In a press release titled “University of Maine System Chooses Sanity,” the USDA announced on Wednesday:

After the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) initiated a Title IX compliance review regarding federal funding, the University of Maine System (UMaine) has clearly communicated its compliance with Title IX’s requirement to protect equal opportunities for women and girls to compete in safe and fair sports, as articulated in President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order. Any false claim by the UMaine can, and will, result in onerous and even potentially criminal financial liability.

UMaine’s decision to side with sanity is a win for women and girls in Maine.

All that having taken place, Trump nevertheless sought more from the state’s governor in a post he shared on his Truth Social platform Saturday.

“While the State of Maine has apologized,” Trump wrote, “we have not heard from the Governor herself, and she is the one that matters in such cases.”

“We need a full throated apology from the Governor herself, and a statement that she will never make such an unlawful challenge to the Federal Government again, before this case can be settled,” he said.

“I’m sure she will be able to do that quite easily,” Trump wrote to add salt to the wound. “Thank you for your attention to this matter and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
