The Federal Bureau of Investigation released a public service announcement warning Americans to “look out” for people who might try to target Tesla properties and vehicles amid a rash of arsons, vandalism, and protests against the brand.

The bureau did not specifically mention the backlash that CEO Elon Musk has faced as he enters his third month working as one of the closest advisers to President Donald Trump, but the warning pertains to an outbreak of criminal acts amid increasingly angry protests taking place both at Tesla’s corporate locations as well as, owners of the environmentally friendly vehicles say, against private citizens and their property.

The FBI did, though, specifically notify the public that Tesla dealerships have been targeted by firebombs and gunfire in recent months.

In an advisory titled “Individuals Target Tesla Vehicles and Dealerships Nationwide with Arson, Gunfire, and Vandalism,” the FBI wrote:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is informing the public of recent nationwide incidents targeting Tesla electric vehicles (EV), dealerships, storage lots, and charging stations. Since January 2025, incidents targeting Tesla EVs have occurred in at least nine states. These incidents have involved arson, gunfire, and vandalism, including graffiti expressing grievances against those the perpetrators perceive to be racists, fascists, or political opponents. These criminal actions appear to have been conducted by lone offenders, and all known incidents occurred at night.

Individuals require little planning to use rudimentary tactics, such as improvised incendiary devices and firearms, and may perceive these attacks as victimless property crimes.

The bureau asked people to “exercise vigilance and to look out for suspicious activity in areas occupied by Tesla dealerships or Tesla-related entities.”

Steps laid out by the FBI to help protect Tesla customers and owners included being on the lookout for people who are surveilling the company’s dealerships and people who have made threats online. And the agency suggests reporting any such activity, too.

“Reporting these crimes can help law enforcement identify violent or malicious actors and prevent further damage,” the FBI said.

Cristen Drummond with News 3 in Las Vegas reported earlier this week that police in the city had been patrolling a Tesla dealership there.

While some dealerships have been targeted by arson and gunfire, individuals across social media have shared images and videos of people painting and vandalizing their parked cars nationwide.
