A high school student in Virginia was diagnosed with a concussion and might have suffered a skull fracture after she was struck on the back of the head with a baton by an opponent during a track meet Friday.

Kaelen Tucker was in second place in the 4×200 meter relay at the Virginia Class 3 State Indoor Championships when she was attacked by another runner, according to her family and a video of the incident.

A video of the race posted on Facebook by the Heritage High School Track & Field Facebook page showed Tucker pass another girl on the track at Liberty University.

Her competitive spirit was met with a blow to the back of the head, which resulted in her falling down seconds later. The moment can be seen at around the 52-second mark of the video posted to social media:

Tucker, who was representing Brookville High School, spoke to Roanoke’s WSLS-TV about the incident and her attacker – a girl from I.C. Norcom High School.

“When you go to the other side of the track, you have to cross into lane one, you have to merge in,” she said. “As I was coming up on her, she kind of like made me get cut off a little bit, so I backed away.”

She added, “Then, as we got around the curve, she kept bumping me in my arm. Then finally we got off the curve, I like slowly started passing her and then that’s when she just hit me with the baton and I fell off the track.”

Tucker’s parents told the outlet their daughter did not receive an apology from the girl who hit her or from anyone from I.C. Norcom High School.

The girl accused of striking Tucker was disqualified from Friday’s event.
