A tornado slammed into a Florida TV station on Monday morning during a live severe weather report, sending employees seeking cover under their desks.

As severe weather made its way across the central part of the state, meteorologist Brooks Garner with WOFL-TV in suburban Orlando updated the station’s viewers on potential hazards.

The veteran weatherman then spotted a rain-wrapped tornado on a live camera outside the station, which he identified as a twister just seconds before the building took a direct hit. The chaotic scene unfolded as Garner reported live.

“I’m continuing to look at those cameras there, that I-4 cam,” he told viewers. “Yeah, let’s turn it west. That’s good. Turn west so you can see it’s going through the tower. Look on the bottom right-hand part of your screen. Keep going. Keep going left and keep going left and keep going. Keep going. And if we can bring that full.”

After the producers placed the station cam where Garner directed them to, he commented on what he saw.

“Do you see that area where the rain – See that?” he said. “That could be it. Guys, bring that camera full. Okay. This is a live view from our TV station. Of what? Maybe, at the very least, it’s torrential rain crossing I-4 right now. We could be looking at a tornado on camera. Look at those trees blowing around.”

Garner then identified what he was looking at as a tornado headed directly toward the WOFL building in the city of Lake Mary.

“This is a look at the live camera of a tornado which could be passing by our station right now,” he said. “Okay. There’s debris. We’ve got debris on. Okay. Take shelter. Everybody in the Fox 35 building, get to your safe space under your desk!”

Garner then screamed, “We’re catching debris right now on the roof! Debris is on the roof right now. We’re hearing you can see the debris flying there on the camera. This is a tornado! Seek shelter immediately. Get under your desks, guys! Anchors under the desks! Everybody get under the desks!”

The station later gave the tornado a preliminary rating as either an EF0 or an EF1.
