‘He’s the Disease!’ Stephen Colbert Compares Trump to Covid Amid Worst Economic Downturn Since Quarantine

By News Here - 12:07

Stephen Colbert on Monday compared President Donald Trump to the Covid-19 pandemic as economic indicators point to the worst downturn in years.

The U.S. stock market saw severe dips Monday amid growing concerns of a recession. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, for example, fell more than 1,000 points before settling at an 890-point loss at market close.

Trump’s ongoing trade wars with Canada and China — initiated by his announcement of steep tariffs on the countries — was widely recognized as a factor in market uncertainty and the ensuing downturn.

On Monday night’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Colbert cited multiple reports describing the extent of that uncertainty. In a piece from Time, a source from Wall Street claimed they were “exhausted” by Trump’s supposed tariff indecision.

“Do you know how hard it is to exhaust Wall Street?” Colbert said. “They wake up every morning to a hot cup of cocaine, and then, just to take the edge off, more cocaine.”

He then quoted a Reuters report that revealed negative economic growth in the current quarter, “signaling that the GDP is shrinking at the fastest pace since the pandemic lockdown.”

“In the first Trump term, it took a disease to destroy the economy,” Colbert said. “This time, he’s the disease!”
