Speaker Johnson Skewered For Putting Scandal-Plagued Republicans on Intelligence Committee

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) raised eyebrows on Wednesday by naming two of the more controversial House GOP members to the highly sensitive House Intelligence Committee.

Punchbowl’s Jake Sherman reported that Speaker Johnson “has named Reps. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) and Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) to the House Intelligence Committee. The Intel Committee oversees the entire intelligence community and gets some of the most sensitive intelligence about the U.S. and its allies.”

Both Perry and Jackson have grabbed headlines in recent years for all the wrong reasons. Jackson’s on-the-job behavior while working in the White House as Trump’s physician led to headlines like this one from CNN: “Rep. Ronny Jackson made sexual comments, drank alcohol and took Ambien while working as White House physician, Pentagon watchdog finds.” Jackson was later demoted from retired admiral to retired captain by the Navy due to the Pentagon’s investigation into his behavior.

Perry, who coordinated with Trump allies surrounding the Jan. 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, was involved in his own scandal. “Federal judge orders texts, emails on Rep. Scott Perry’s phone be turned over to prosecutors in 2020 election probe,” read a CBS headline from 2023. Perry and Jackson’s past scandals led commentators and journalists to react with both surprise and scorn at Johnson’s decision to place them on the Intelligence Committee.
