‘Enough is Enough’: ESPN Analyst Supports NFL Suspending Steelers Player for the Season for Frequent Targeting Penalties

By News Here - 11:07

NFL analyst Jeff Saturday believes Pittsburgh Steelers safety Damontae Kazee got what he deserved when he was suspended for the rest of the season for repeated instances of targeting.

During the Steelers’s week-15 game against the Indianapolis Colts, Kazee hit Colts receiver Michael Pittman Jr. in the head as Pittman dove to make a catch. The contact resulted in Pittman’s body awkwardly bending backward and he was injured on the play. Kazee was immediately flagged for the hit. Shortly after, the referees decided to eject him.

A day later, the NFL decided to suspend him for the rest of the season. The verdict was based on the severity of the hit and Kazee’s recent history. This season, he’s been fined five times for making what the league considers excessive contact with his helmet.

The suspension has since been the subject of great debate. Some people — including Tom Brady — felt it was unfair to punish a defender for trying to make a play. They argue that quarterbacks should also be held accountable for throwing the ball in spots that put receivers at risk of big hits.

Regardless, Saturday felt the league was right to put its foot down on Kazee.

“But as far as where he is, he fully deserved to be kicked out of that game,” Saturday said on Tuesday’s episode of First Take. “He deserves the suspensions because, again, you get to a certain point where — as a player — I’m all about live action, man. We ain’t running away from it. We understand we play a game that has the potential to be very dangerous and very violent; but we also understand that every player that lines up wants to go home and be with their family after the game is over.

“So, if you are limited multiple people’s opportunity to do that because you keep doing the same thing over and over and over, and you’ve had fines reduced or whatever the league is doing to you, at some point, enough is enough. So, I think that’s where, to me, it is probably a fair deal because it is. Five in a year? Dang, bro.”
