Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen started CNN New Year’s Eve show off with a bang, toasting not just the end of 2023, but also the end of the network’s prohibition for alcohol during the show.

Last year, the two hosts were ordered by CNN’s policy to have none of their personnel drink during the show, a company decision that drew tremendous outrage from media observers. This year, as Cooper and Cohen previewed the evening ahead, Cohen brought up the elephant in the room by turning to the question of whether they’d get to be sloshed up this time.

“Speaking of traditions, it’s the top of the hour. We’ve been here for seven years doing this, and for most of those years — well, at the top of the hour we typically have a toast,” Cohen said. “And I feel that I’m hearing from a lot of people, and I guess I’m just wondering, does daddy get his juice?”

“Can daddy get his juice responsibly?” Cooper dryly responded, to which, Cohen mischievously answered “of course! Always.”

When Cooper said he had no booze, Cohen showed he was completely prepared, pulling a bottle of tequila out of his bag.

“Anderson, this is why I’m a really good partner to you. I got it! We’re doing this!” Cohen exclaimed to Cooper’s chagrin.

After inviting the viewers to toast with them, Cohen and Cooper extended their “Cheers to everyone,” and the first shots were downed.

Will this lead to more alcohol-fueled antics throughout the evening? Maybe even a shenanigan or two? Who knows? Let’s find out!
