‘A Heartbreaking Day on the Hill’: Florida Republican Slams ‘Inappropriate’ Santos Expulsion on Fox News
The House voted overwhelmingly Friday to expel Rep. George Santos (R-NY) from Congress, but one of the House GOP members who voted against the move told Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner that she believed it was inappropriate and a “heartbreaking” decision.
Florida Republican Rep. Kat Cammack voted against expelling Santos on Friday, and in an interview on The Faulkner Focus on Fox News, she said that the move was against the interests of New York voters and the country overall.
“I understand you voted against, against expelling George Santos,” said Faulkner with emphasis. “Why?”
Cammack first acknowledged that the decision is within the scope and under the purview of the House under the Constitution, but said that taking representation away from the district at this time was “inappropriate,” despite the New York congressman’s many ethical failures.
“For me, without a conviction, despite a damning ethics report, I am very concerned about setting a precedent that in the People’s House, 750,000 people in New York’s 3rd Congressional District would be left without representation,” she said. “And so while we have so many issues to contend with in our government, I felt that it was inappropriate to deny those constituents in his congressional district their right to representation. Elections have consequences, but they have a right to have their voice heard in the people’s house.”
As the conversation continued, Cammack told Faulkner that she advised her fellow Republicans ahead of the vote that, “If we have a Democrat that is put forward without a conviction, we need to step forward and have a consistent voting record here. I think that’s critically important because Americans are sick and tired of the double standard.”
FAULKNER: Want to go to Congresswoman Kat Cammack, who is just back from actually voting herself on the expulsion measure. And a Republican Congresswoman from the great state of Florida. And I understand you voted against, against expelling George Santos. Why?
CAMMACK: Well, good to see you, Harris. And yes, Chad’s correct. Under the Constitution, Article One, Section Five, Clause Two, the House has the right and ability to govern members, including up and to expulsion. That being said, for me, without a conviction, despite a damning ethics report, I am very concerned about setting a precedent that in the People’s House, 750,000 people in New York’s 3rd Congressional District would be left without representation. And so while we have so many issues to contend with in our government, I felt that it was inappropriate to deny those constituents in his congressional district their right to representation. Elections have consequences, but they have a right to have their voice heard in the people’s house.
FAULKNER: Look, one of the things he’s been very vocal about is supporting Israel throughout its war against the the bloodthirsty terrorists of Hamas who killed innocent citizens on October 7th in Israel. That war continues. And he’s been very vocal and very emotional about that issue. That’s one of the voices now, you know, as Republicans like yourself, get together and try to figure out next steps for Israel from a congressional point, that’s one of the voices that gets quieted.
CAMMACK: Yes. I mean, certainly this is now become a an even more a bigger situation here in in the House where now our majority is down to two. And every vote certainly counts, but for me, this was not a political vote. As I said, from a Constitutional perspective, denying representation in the people’s House, it is a very, very serious deal. And with the 10th Amendment, states rights, the states have the ability to determine the time, manner, and place in which elections are conducted, they have determined that they were sending this representative. We certified New York’s election. We need to make sure that we’re honoring those constituents voice. So it has not been an easy vote. It has been many, many conversations this week, very contentious. It’s a heartbreaking day on the Hill, on both sides.
