Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) blasted the global tariffs President Donald Trump is planning to implement starting this Wednesday.

In an interview with WABC radio in New York Sunday, the Kentucky Senator cited opposition in his home state from auto manufacturers and the bourbon industry — among other sectors he believes will be hurt by the tariffs.

“I think tariffs are bad for any country, and I think they’d be bad for America, and economically, I think it’ll hurt us,” Paul said. “The stock market… there’s millions of people voting every day with their pocketbook and the stock market’s very skittish, afraid of tariffs.”

Paul believes the argument from Trump officials that the tariffs are vital for national security does not hold water.

“This is just something I disagree with President Trump on,” Paul said. “I’m not for the tariffs and will continue to speak out on it because really international trade since World War II has made us phenomenally rich. President Trump thinks in another way. He says we’ve been taken advantage of. But I just — I really, really strongly disagree because trade has made us so rich and really has made the world a better place. The more we trade, I think the less we fight.”

New polling out Sunday from CBS shows 64 percent of Americans do not believe the Trump administration is sufficiently focused on lowering prices. Senator Paul shares that concern — particularly if the tariffs are enacted this week as scheduled.

“If he puts the tariffs on now, there’s some people estimating that a car can cost five to ten thousand dollars more because of tariffs,” Paul said. “We still have some inflation left over from the Biden years. There are people who are struggling to get a car. There are some people struggling to buy a house because of interest rates. And I just don’t think it’s a good idea to put tariffs on now because I think it’ll add to the price of everything.”

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum told Fox News host Lara Trump there is room for her father-in-law President Donald Trump’s face on Mount Rushmore Saturday night.

Burgum joined Fox’s My View with Lara Trump Saturday to discuss a number of topics related to his department and what he has accomplished on behalf of Trump throughout two months on the job.

The former North Dakota governor noted the Gulf of Mexico had been renamed to the Gulf of America and also praised Trump for recently renaming a wildlife preserve after a 12-year-old Texas girl who was murdered last year by an illegal migrant. The Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge in Chambers County, TX honors the slain child.

“To have the loss of a beautiful 12-year-old daughter, it’s incomprehensible to have such a tragedy committed by people that should not have been in our country,” Burgum said. “In our country, there are legally violent criminals to do that. So for President Trump to invite her sister and her mother, Alexis, to be at his address to Congress and really say, hey, we’re not going to let this happen to anybody else.

Lara Trump then pressed her guest about Mount Rushmore and whether he sees any room on the monument for her father-in-law alongside former Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

“The Department of Interior is in charge of the National Park Service,” she said. “The National Park Services is in charge of Mount Rushmore. A lot of people wonder! Will we ever see President Trump’s face on Mount Rushmore? What do you think?”

“Well,” Burgum replied, “they certainly have room for it there.”

The White House Correspondents Association will not feature anti-Trump comic Amber Ruffin at this year’s annual dinner after the White House complained about her on Friday.

WHCA President Eugene Daniels announced the news Saturday in an email obtained by CNN’s Brian Stelter.

Daniels announced the decision not to have a comic at the WHCA dinner after complaints from White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich about comments Ruffin made on The Daily Beast podcast Friday.

Ruffin said on the show that the Trump White House is staffed with “murderers” who are not “human beings.”

Daniels’ letter read in full:

Dear White House Press Corps colleagues,

The board is looking forward to our dinner on April 26 as a celebration of the foundational American value of a free and independent press. For the past couple of weeks, I have been planning a re-envisioning of our dinner tradition for this year. As the date nears, I will share more details of the plans in place to honor journalistic excellence and a robust, independent media covering the most powerful office in the world. Britain’s Sky News was met with swift backlash on Saturday after the outlet connected President Donald Trump and DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) to suffering in Myanmar after a devastating earthquake killed at least one thousand people on Friday.

A 7.7 magnitude tremor that struck near Mandalay rocked the region, destroying buildings and spreading devastation as far away as Bangkok.

Authorities in Myanmar were still rescuing people trapped on Saturday when Dominic Waghorn with Sky News connected the disaster to Trump and DOGE’s targeting of the United States Agency for International Development.

In an analysis of USAID and how its shuttering of aid programs related to the quake, Waghorn wrote:

The impact in the aftermath of this earthquake is likely to be severe. Trump’s decision to shut down the US Agency for International Development was already reported to have decimated US aid operations in Myanmar. Its global impact is hard to overstate. American aid had provided 40% of developmental aid worldwide.

Yesterday, Trump promised Myanmar aid for the earthquake. In reality, his administration has fired most of the people most experienced at organising that help and shut down the means to provide it.

Sky News boosted Waghorn’s report on X with the headline, “The Myanmar quake is the first major disaster to suffer the brunt of Donald Trump’s devastating cuts.”

The outlet was met with immense backlash from Trump supporters, but others also ripped into Sky News for what they viewed as finding a way to quickly politicize the tragic natural disaster. Here is a small sample of the blowback:

A federal judge temporarily blocked DOGE from its shutdown of USAID, flagging that the group may have violated the Constitution in “multiple ways.”

“The Court finds that Defendants’ actions taken to shut down USAID on an accelerated basis, including its apparent decision to permanently close USAID headquarters without the approval of a duly appointed USAID officer, likely violated the Constitution in multiple ways,” the judge found.

Bill Maher roasted Republican politicians Friday night who he said suffered from “Trump devotion syndrome” and are completely subservient to the president.

On Friday’s edition of Real Time, the host acknowledged he had become popular on the right over his willingness to call out what he saw as extremism on the left.

Maher said it was only fair to remind them he was willing to call out similar extremism on their side of the aisle – including a devotion to Trump that he likened to “macho” conservatives “eating the ass of another man.”

Maher said he had been asked why he would not just abandon the left and added, “Let me give you the short answer: Because I don’t want to live in North Korea. He added:

Kim Jong-un has state stenographers who follow him everywhere and scribble his genius ideas into their notebooks and applaud. Well, Republicans, that’s you now! Republican Congressman Madison McDowell wants to name Dulles Airport after Trump. It’ll be like other airports, except the International Terminal only has departures. There’s also a bill in Congress to add Trump to Mount Rushmore because like Washington, he’s a patriot. Like Teddy Roosevelt, he is a renegade. And like Abraham Lincoln, he’s not really helping the theater scene in Washington, D.C.

Yeah, the Kennedy Center is not something I really care a lot about, but I do care that an American president doesn’t see anything wrong with him personally taking it over or that his communications director, Stephen Cheung, said it was justified because Trump “is a virtuoso and is and his musical choices represent a brilliant palette of vibrant colors when others often paint in pale pastels.” Jesus, Stephen, don’t get any in your hair.

Maher also hit Republican politicians for emulating Trump’s dance style and clothing.

“Yeah, all these super macho guys eating the ass of another man,” he concluded. “If I admit that there is a level of Trump derangement syndrome on the left, will you admit that this shit is also deranged?”

Maher is scheduled to have dinner with Trump in the near future in a meeting that was arranged by Kid Rock.

I love my (admittedly last-gen) Kindle Paperwhite, but even though I know its 6.8-inch screen isn't actually that much smaller than most paperback pages, I still sometimes feel like I have to squint to read it. The Kindle Scribe is Amazon's only e-note, meaning it's intended more for writing on than reading with, but it will work for both. It can access your entire Kindle library, and thanks to its 10.3-inch screen, text and images do feel like they have more room to breathe on it. This can be especially good for comics (although, the black-and-white screen might make you want to stick to manga) and articles, and I've been tempted to upgrade for that reason alone before.

The problem was the price, which is normally a little steep at $400. Starting at $325 with this sale, though, it's suddenly a much more attractive prospect.

And that goes double when you take into account the Kindle Scribe's intended use case. It comes with a stylus that lets you mark up PDFs and jot down notes in either your own documents or in dedicated boxes in existing books, and Amazon says it's retuned this model to have a more paper-like feel when writing on it. Yes, there is AI here too, although it's fairly unobtrusive—when you're done handwriting a note, you can have the Scribe quickly summarize it, "refine" it, or reconfigure it into a digital font, if you like.

There are arguments to be made for other e-notes despite all this functionality—my colleague, Joel Cunningham, recently reviewed a similar device, the Boox Note Air 4C, that has a color screen and can run Android—but if you're already in the Kindle ecosystem, this Scribe sale could make for a handy little upgrade.

Dutch ovens are heavy duty cast iron behemoths ready to take on your next cooking challenge whether it’s steamed, braised, boiled, or fried. But usually with that much power comes (you guessed it) a ridiculous price tag. It’s important to note, while Staub and Le Creuset can retail for $200 to $500, other brands are just as effective. Here are three good options—well below $100—on sale right now for Amazon’s Big Spring Sale.

For a smaller Dutch oven

I’m a fan of Lodge—I’ve had a 12-inch cast iron skillet that’s been a fabulous helper for nearly a decade—and their 3-quart Dutch oven has been deeply discounted. Normally this petite Lodge Dutch oven retails for over $100, but you can get it for $55.17. (Note that some of the different colors might come up at $60.)

While a 3-quart pot isn’t very large, you can still cook three to four servings of side dishes, stews, and soups in this size pot. Here are some of my favorite things to cook in my Dutch oven. This size is great for smaller storage situations, and considerably lighter if you’re not interested in hoisting a 15-pound hunk of metal onto your stove. This heavy duty piece of cookware can last a generation if you take care of it, and look snazzy while doing it.

Larger options 

Overmont. While I’m not familiar with Overmont, this Dutch oven is a good option if you’re looking for a larger pot. This highly rated Dutch oven is a 5.5-quart pot, which is better for baking loaves of bread or making six to eight servings of soups and stews. It’s also good for braising roasts or thick cuts of meat, and can withstand temperatures up to 500°F, moving seamlessly from stove top to oven for braising, or high-temperature bread baking. It’s $59.49 with a $5 coupon right now. 

Lodge. If there’s a Lodge option for a bigger pot then I’m going to find it—and I have. This is their 6-quart Dutch oven on sale for $67.49. Granted, it’s a few bucks more expensive than the 3-quart above, but with that extra space you can do a whole lot more. 

Video of a US Secret Service agent apprehending a child who found his way onto the North Lawn of the White House Wednesday went viral on social media.

The incident happened just after 6:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday evening with the child, whose age was withheld, seemingly impervious to the magnitude of the moment.

Images of a Secret Service agent armed with a long gun and a tactical vest carrying the child away racked up millions of views:

Video journalist Tyler Smith with Gray Television caught the moment on camera and commented, “A kid squeezed through the fence on the north lawn of the White House. Secret Service has retrieved him and brought him back to his parents.”

Anthony Guglielmi, the communications chief for the Secret Service, said agents watched the boy slip through the fence and were quick to approach him and reunite him with his family.

“Just after 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officers observed a child slip through the White House north fence,” Guglielmi said in a statement. “Officers quickly reunited the child with their parents without incident.”

Wednesday was not the first time in recent memory that a child has made his way onto the White House grounds. As The Hill noted, a young boy was able to squeeze through the fence two years ago in April 2023:

Onlookers inside the White House property noticed fuss, and some spotted the child being removed by Secret Service. Access to the White House complex was restricted during the commotion. President Biden was on the property at the time of the pint-sized perimeter breach.

The parents of the child were questioned and sent on their way with the trespassing tot in tow.

The Secret Service said at that time, “The Secret Service Uniformed Division today encountered a curious young visitor along the White House north fence line who briefly entered White House grounds. The White House security systems instantly triggered Secret Service officers and the toddler and parents were quickly reunited.”

While you might assume that thieves would prefer to find less visible, less public ways of breaking into your house, your front door and entryway are actually prime targets for anyone who wants inside without your permission—more than a third of burglars use the front door when gaining entry to a home.

If you want to sleep a little better at night, securing your home's entryway is a good first step. Even if you have a security system in place, stopping a home invasion from taking place at all is a much better outcome. Doing just a few of these things will make it a lot harder for anyone to break into your home and compromise your property and your safety.

Select a front door made of a secure material

Your first step towards securing your entryway is the door itself. A solid-core wood door provides decent security, but an upgrade to a steel door will make it even more difficult for a would-be home invader to cut, kick, or break the door itself. Aluminum or fiberglass are also solid choices to increase the security of your door, though they’re also generally more expensive.

Whatever material your front door is made of, you can enhance its security by installing a metal security door, which is like a storm door that adds an extra lockable barrier over your front door, making it even less likely that someone can gain access without your permission.

Reinforce the door's frame

If you can’t install a security door, you can still add some security to your existing door by reinforcing the frame. The locks on your door (and the door itself) will only be as good as the frame the door is attached to—the best lock in the world will be useless if one well-placed kick will crack the frame.

You can purchase simple kits like this one that will reinforce your door frame and make it a lot more difficult to kick or pry the weak points on your door—the hinges and jamb. Typically made from steel, these plates stiffen the existing frame material and deflect tools away from weak spots.

Reconsider those decorative glass windows

Entryways with a lot of glass are popular because they let in natural light, but if your front door has a lot of glass inserts or sidelights (the narrow areas on either side), that’s a huge security risk because glass is so easily broken (see any film or TV show depicting a burglary, ever). Reducing or eliminating glass in your entryway is an easy way to increase security simply because it removes the weak point.

If you can’t remove the glass (or simply don’t want to sacrifice the light), you can replace it with security glass. If that’s too expensive, you can also install a security window film. Security films won’t necessarily stop a determined thief from smashing their way into your home, but they can slow them down and make the job more challenging, increasing the chances they’ll give up before gaining entry.

Upgrade your locks

Just as your door locks will only be optimally effective if your door frame is hardened, your door will only be secure if you use a high-quality lock with an appropriate security grade. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) applies a grade of 1 to 3 to all locks that describes their security level—Grade 1 is the best. Installing Grade 1 locks (make sure they actually have the official ANSI seal on them) will give you the best security for your front door.

Adding a deadbolt to the door is an easy way to make it more difficult for someone to break in. A single-cylinder deadbolt (with keyed entry on the outside and a thumbturn on the inside) are best for residential doors, because needing to use a key on the interior will make it a lot harder to get out in an emergency.

Upgrade hardware

Another way to make your entryway more secure is to do some small upgrades to the door’s other hardware—the hinges and strike plate:

• Deeper screws. Most screws supplied with door hinges will be about 1 to 2.25 inches long. That’s certainly sufficient, but a deeper screw will be more difficult to tear out, increasing the overall strength of the door. Replacing your hinge screws with 3-inch (or deeper) is a cheap, simple way to make the entryway more secure. Just be sure to check that there’s enough depth to handle the longer screws, and that the screws won’t interfere with nearby windows or wiring in the walls.

• Hinge bolts. Hinge bolts install between the door hinges (see them in action here) and make it difficult for someone to lift the door off the frame even if they manage to push the pins out of the hinges. These are mainly useful if your door swings outward (most residential doors swing inward) but certainly can’t hurt, especially as they’re cheap and easy to install.

• Strike box. The strike plate is the strip of metal where the bolt and latch from the door connects with the frame. It’s typically just a flat piece that doesn’t provide much by way of reinforcement, so installing a strike box instead is a good idea. A strike box inserts into the hole drilled for the latch or bolt and helps absorb and spread any impact from an attempt to break the door frame.

Rework your landscaping for maximum visibility

A simple way to enhance the security of your entryway is to clear away landscaping that hides your front door from the street. While privacy is always nice, if you have a lot of lush landscaping around your front door it could be an opportunity for someone to work on your door unobserved. This combined with plenty of light at night will make even the most determined thief think twice about assaulting your door.

Get rid of that spare key in the front yard

Even if you make your front door a marvel of strength and security, it means nothing if you leave a spare key under the doormat—or hidden in one of those obvious fake rocks. Everyone needs some spare keys seeded around their lives to prevent being locked out of their own home, but be thoughtful about where those keys are. A trusted neighbor or nearby friend (or relative) or tucked in a desk at your job are good ideas. Don’t hide the key anywhere near the door, however, as it’s too easy for a cursory check to turn it up.

Of course, going keyless with a smart lock is another option that removes the possibility of losing your key—though it still might be a good idea for someone you trust who lives nearby to have the code in case you ever need someone to get into your house.

Wall Street Journal national security reporter Alex Ward poured ice cold water over one of the Trump administration’s defenses to the shocking scandal that’s been dubbed “Signalgate,” citing military sources to say their response actually made it worse.

Monday brought a stunning article from Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, describing how National Security Adviser Mike Waltz had accidentally added him in a group chat on the encrypted messaging app Signal that included the “principals committee,” top level national security agency officials in President Donald Trump’s administration, as they discussed war plans and messaging strategies related to striking the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen earlier this month.

According to Goldberg’s bombshell report, besides Waltz the chat apparently included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, “and someone identified only as ‘S M,’ which I took to stand for [Homeland Security advisor and White House deputy chief of staff] Stephen Miller.”

Goldberg then followed up with a new article Wednesday morning that shared the attack plans Hegseth and others insisted were not in the group chat, including more screenshots of the chats. The headline of the article, “Here Are the Attack Plans That Trump’s Advisers Shared on Signal,” has been waved around by several White House officials to claim that it is a concession that no “war plans” were shared.

“The Atlantic has conceded: these were NOT ‘war plans,’” tweeted White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. “This entire story was another hoax written by a Trump-hater who is well-known for his sensationalist spin.” Vance and Waltz made similar plays in their own tweets; “NO WAR PLANS,” wrote Waltz. A tweet by the DOD Rapid Response account accused Goldberg and The Atlantic of having “backpedaled the whole ‘war plans’ thing really really fast.”

This quibbling over “attack plans” vs. “war plans” isn’t just a red herring, according to WSJ’s Ward, who has covered national security issues for years, including a previous stint at Politico, where he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist with his colleagues. To the contrary, wrote Ward, “attack plans” are actually treated as “more sensitive.”

Wrote Ward:

Speaking to military folks all morning. Here’s the difference, per them, on “war plan” vs “attack plan.”

A “war plan” is the full-scope of an operation, i.e. invasion of Ukraine or campaign vs. ISIS.

An “attack plan” is the acute outline of what will be used to attack targets.

Some former military officials said attack plans are *more* sensitive than war plans because they involve tons of specifics and classified details.

War plans, while important and certainly sensitive, tend to be higher-level and far less operational.

• Sony SRS-XG300 X-Series Speaker $142.95 (originally $349.99). The SRS-XG300 is a solid portable speaker with loud and heavy bass, and like any outdoor speaker, it can handle the elements well.

• Anker MagGo Magnetic Charging Station $49.99 (originally $99.99). I'm a fan of charging stations because they satisfy both my need for organization and practicality. This one from Anker has MagGo for wireless iPhone charging, three outlets, two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, and a magnetic pad.

• Anker SOLIX C1000 Portable Power Station $449 (originally $999). It's hard to predict when you'll need a portable power generator—and when you need one, you usually really need one. • Eufy Security SoloCam S220 $64.99 (originally $129.99). I love Eufy cameras because they're subscription-free. The SoloCam S220 also has a solar panel to make it self-sustainable, meaning you can easily install it somewhere with direct sunlight and let it do its thing.

• Eufy Digital Bathroom Scale P2 Pro $37.98 (originally $79.99) with code P2PROUSA at checkout. You can buy digital smart scales that read your body fat percentage from any no-brand company for cheap, but why not get it from a trusted brand also for cheap, after a 50% discount?
