The View’s Ana Navarro Cites Completely Fake Pardon of ‘Hunter deButts’ In Defense of the Hunter Biden Pardon

Ana Navarro on The View

The View‘s Ana Navarro-Cárdenas took an unorthodox approach to defending President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, for any and all federal crimes he might have committed over the the last decade and change on Monday.

In a tweet fired off on Monday night, Navarro-Cárdenas scoffed at the idea that Biden’s sweeping pardon of his progeny was setting a poor precedent.

Woodrow Wilson pardoned his brother-in-law, Hunter deButts. Bill Clinton pardoned his brother, Roger. Donald Trump pardoned his daughter’s father-in-law, Charlie Kushner. And just appointed him Ambassador to France. But tell me again how Joe Biden ‘is setting precedent’? 🤣🤣,” she wrote.

Whatever you might make of the merits of Navarro-Cárdenas argument, there’s a pretty glaring factual error here: Woodrow Wilson didn’t have a brother-in-law named “Hunter deButts,” so it’s unclear where the CNN contributor got her information from.

Although the name “Hunter deButts” should have perhaps raised some red flags, Republican operative Zach Parkinson did some extra digging  to prove that Navarro-Cárdenas had been duped:

5,000 likes on this post, but no one seems to have noticed that the first example is fake

There’s (unsurprisingly) no record of Woodrow Wilson having a brother-in-law named “Hunter de Butts”

Woodrow Wilson was married twice – to Ellen Axson Wilson and Edith Bolling Galt Wilson

Neither had a brother named “Hunter deButts”

And even if you go one degree further, out of Wilson’s wives’ five combined sisters, none appears to have been married to anyone named “de Butts”

Wilson himself had two sisters: Marion and Annie Josephine

Marion died in 1890, 22 years before Wilson was elected president, and Annie Josephine died in 1916 at the end of Wilson’s first term

Neither married anyone named “deButts”

A Community Note affixed to Navarro-Cárdenas’s original post reads: “There is no evidence that Woodrow Wilson had a brother-in-law named ‘Hunter DeButts’. While at least one person by that name was living during Wilson’s presidency, there is nothing to suggest any relation, or that they were pardoned—the only result is this tweet.”
