DNC finance committee member Lindy Li stunned NewsNation host Markie Martin Sunday morning when she defended Pete Hegseth as a “good guy” during a discussion about his controversial nomination to run the Pentagon.

Hegseth was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump last month to run the military. Hegseth has been under fire since the nomination over allegations of sexual assault, marital infidelity, and past alcohol abuse.

On Morning In America, Martin welcomed Li and conservative Alexa Henning to discuss whether Hegseth could make it through his confirmation hearings.

Martin asked Henning, “Are things trending in the wrong direction for Seth?”

Henning noted Heseth has been in Washington making his case for confirmation to senators.

“I know he’s been out there quite a lot,” she said. “And I think he’s very qualified. He’s a veteran. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has two bronze stars.”

Martin then turned to Li, apparently seeking a counterargument against Hegseth’s nomination – which Li did not offer and which stunned Martin.

The Democratic strategist said she had been on Fox & Friends with Heseth and also noted they went to Princeton together:

MARTIN: Do you think Hegseth is about to make it through confirmation hearings? What are you picking up on?

LI: Thank you so much for having me. Well, actually, I think maybe you’re looking for someone to oppose this nomination, but I actually have personal interactions because I did on Fox and Friends. I met Pete, and he’s my fellow Princetonian, and I actually think he’s a pretty good guy.

MARTIN: SWow. I was not expecting this from you, Lindy.

LI: I know, but fair is fair, right? I’m here. I’m not here to gaslight anybody. I’m just here to present the facts as I know it. And I will say, a lot of people are saying his nomination is in trouble because, see, he is definitely a fighter. As he told Meghan Kelly, he said Trump asked him to be tough as blank. And he’s certainly that way. And we’ll just see.
