California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) seemed more than happy to stir the pot on what has become a full-blown MAGA civil war when he weighed in Sunday about supporting “hardworking immigrants.”

“Good to see Trump embrace Elon’s position,” Newsom posted on Elon Musk’s X platform. “Hardworking immigrants should continue to be part of our great nation. From Silicon Valley to the Central Valley, we are better off when we have competition and top talent – from farmworkers, construction workers, CEOs, and beyond.”

Of course, Trump — along with Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cohort Vivek Ramaswamy — have been speaking out in support of highly-educated tech-workers who come to the United States on H-1B visas, not laborers from Mexico and Central America that Trump has threatened to deport.

It all started a week ago when Ramaswamy praised “immigrant parents” for raising achievers that outperform Americans who settle for “mediocrity”. Musk jumped in to support foreign-born tech workers, and on Saturday, Trump backed Musk’s position — telling the New York Post, “I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It’s a great program.”

MAGA stalwarts like Steve Bannon and Laura Loomer were furious that any conservative would support taking jobs away from Americans.

In an earlier post Sunday, Newsom wrote “top talent is top talent”, implying that all immigrants should be welcome in the U.S. and calling out Big Tech companies like Musk’s Tesla.

“@ElonMusk is right when he said: ‘you need to recruit top talent wherever they may be.’ The same principle should apply to supporting our farmworkers, construction, and trades workers who build and feed our country. Top talent is top talent.

“Wouldn’t you agree @CAFarmBureau & @WesternGrowers, @CaliforniaBIA & @AGCofA? I know @Apple, @Meta, @Tesla, @Amazon and @Google do.”

Also Sunday, Fox & Friends Weekend commented that Trump’s position on the issue, “left a lot of people confused”.
