Former President Donald Trump announced in a Saturday morning social media post that he would resume holding rallies outdoors just 13 days after he was shot in the ear by a would-be assassin’s bullet.

On July 13, Trump was targeted by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, the FBI said. According to ton the bureau, Crooks scaled a roof at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, wounded Trump and two others, and killed 50-year-old Corey Comperatore.

As Axios reported earlier this week, the Secret Service had asked Trump to scale back or cancel outdoor campaign events altogether. In a post from his Truth Social account, Trump announced he would move ahead with speaking outdoors.

He also said that the Secret Service had promised to protect him.

“I WILL CONTINUE TO DO OUTDOOR RALLIES, AND SECRET SERVICE HAS AGREED TO SUBSTANTIALLY STEP UP THEIR OPERATION,” he wrote. “THEY ARE VERY CAPABLE OF DOING SO. NO ONE CAN EVER BE ALLOWED TO STOP OR IMPEDE FREE SPEECH OR GATHERING!!!”

Trump’s announcement followed a statement he made Friday in which he said he would soon return to Butler to finish the rally that was cut short when he was fired upon. Trump referenced Comeratore, a former firefighter and a father who died at the rally protecting his family.

“I WILL BE GOING BACK TO BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA, FOR A BIG AND BEAUTIFUL RALLY, HONORING THE SOUL OF OUR BELOVED FIREFIGHTING HERO, COREY, AND THOSE BRAVE PATRIOTS INJURED TWO WEEKS AGO,” Trump wrote. “WHAT A DAY IT WILL BE — FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT! STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS.”

Trump was scheduled to hold an indoor rally in Minnesota Saturday evening alongside his running mate Sen. JD Vance (R-OH).

A Fox News poll released Friday evening showed Trump trailing Vice President Kamala Harris in the state by six points less than a week after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her.
