Before Monday’s Republican National Convention kicks off on Monday, the official social media accounts for the GOP on Saturday blasted out a stylized graphic featuring a quote attributed to former President Barack Obama commenting on the tendency of President Joe Biden to mess things up.

Only the quote doesn’t say “mess up.”

The quote was first popularized and shared online during the first Biden-Trump election fight in 2020 and has been used a lot, especially in the last few months, to suggest that even Biden’s allies are worried about his ability to pull off a second win against Trump or even make it through the election or a second term coherently. It’s a question that has been top of mind for Democrats in the continuing fall-out from the president’s alarming performance at the CNN presidential debate a few weeks ago.

Among the many on the left and in the party who are calling for Biden to step aside as the nominee are former Obama staffers and those in his inner circle, to include Obama himself reportedly. Actor and close Obama associate George Clooney wrote a New York Times oped on the subject and the prospect of war between the Obama camp and the Biden camp became a hot topic.

“Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to fuck things up,” is what Obama allegedly said in private about Biden’s “gaffe-prone nature” back in 2020.

The GOP blasted it out as a large print graphic in a stand-alone message shared on X, Instagram, and Facebook – with a very slight “bleep,” so to speak, of the profanity.

The origin of the quote is from a Politico article about Biden running an ad implying Obama’s support of his candidacy during the Democratic primary before he’d actually given it, via an unnamed Democrat.

One Democrat who is neutral in the 2020 race and spoke to Obama about Biden’s gaffe-prone nature recalled the former president saying: “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to fuck things up.”

During President Biden’s remarks at his Friday rally, he had yet another gaffe in a recent streak of name swaps when he referred to Michigan Democrat Rep. Debbie Dingell as “Debbie Haley” – presumably mixing her up with Republican Nikki Haley.
