Democrats Use Years-Old and Out-of-Context Rachel Maddow Quote in Fundraising Plea After Biden Debate Disaster

By News Here - 12:07

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee used a years-old and out-of-context quote from Rachel Maddow to urge supporters to donate to Democrats in the wake of President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance last week.

The DSCC, the chief fundraising committee working towards electing Democrats to the Senate, sent out an email blast urging donations on Sunday. “November could decide Senate control for years,” the email stated. “We must fight for EVERY SEAT to DEFEND our majority.”

It then featured a photo and a quote from the MSNBC star: “If you have money to donate, now is the time.”

“Donate by midnight to TRIPLE your impact: DONATE NOW (We need every Democrat in the fight!),” the email  continued, with options for different contribution amounts.

Despite the apparent urgency of Maddow’s call as presented in the email, her comments appear to have actually pulled from an October 2020 episode of her show, which aired weeks before the 2020 election between Biden and then-President Donald Trump.

“I mean we’re here,” Maddow said on the Oct. 2020 broadcast. “Three weeks and one day left.  If you are going to do anything, this is the time to do it.  And when you wake up on Election Day, won’t you want to know that you have done all you could have done?”

“I mean, and, yes, that’s your personal voting plan in terms of getting your vote in and your vote counted. But it’s more than that, right? If you are going to donate, if you have money to donate, now is the time.  If you are going to phone bank for a candidate or for a proposition or for a party, now is the time,” she added.

This would not be the first time the DSCC used the likeness of the MSNBC star in an effort to raise money. At the end of 2020, after Biden’s victory, the committee sent out fundraising appeals labeled as a “Rachel Maddow Alert,” though they contained no message from the broadcaster.

Maddow, who anchored MSNBC’s coverage of the debate on Thursday night, was among the journalists who acknowledged Biden’s weak performance, which has sent panic coursing through Democratic politics and sparked widespread calls for him to drop out of the race before the convention in August.

MSNBC and the DSCC did not respond to requests for comment.
