Several prominent Democratic lawmakers have gone on record giving credit to President Donald Trump for his efforts to bring about peace in the Middle East.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), who has been a staunch supporter of Israel, quoted former hostage Eli Sharabi, who said the words, “Now, life,” after being released from Hamas’s custody. “Credit to @POTUS for a breakthrough ceasefire of this awful war,” Fetterman wrote.
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), another big congressional supporter of Israel, wrote, “A weight has been lifted off the world as the remaining hostages are released. Amazing day for the families and for @POTUS and all the negotiators who made this day possible.”
Rep. Don Davis (D-NC) wrote, “President Trump and the negotiators are to be commended as this historic agreement unfolds, offering hope for a brighter future for democracy and regional stability in the Middle East.”
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) gave credit to former President Joe Biden as well as to Trump, writing, “Today is the result of great American leadership, led by President Trump and his team, and also the tireless efforts of the Biden Administration. I am grateful to them and to all of those who played a role in the hostage release.”
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) wrote in a release, “I thank President Trump, Qatar, Egypt, and negotiators from the Israeli and Palestinian communities for making the safe return of the hostages, and the cease-fire, possible.”
On CNN, Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) was asked if he gave Trump credit. “Certainly!” he answered. “This is an incredible accomplishment.”
Rep. Ro Khanna took a noncommittal approach when asked by MSNBC’s Chris Hayes about who should get the credit for the peace deal.
“I mean, I really don’t care, frankly, whether Trump gets credit, whether we get credit,” Khanna said. “This has been the most horrific, gut-wrenching war. And I just want it to end, and I want us to start to work towards peace.”
The Jewish News Syndicate noted some of the Democratic leaders who praised the peace deal but stopped short of crediting Trump by name. They included New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D).
