Zelenskyy Says Russia-Ukraine War Will End ‘Sooner’ With Trump Back in White House: ‘He Is On The Side of Supporting Ukraine’
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russia’s war on Ukraine will “end sooner” with President-elect Donald Trump back in the White House.
Zelenskyy spoke about the military situation in Ukraine with media outlet Suspilne in an interview released on Saturday where he claimed the conflict needs to end by “next year through diplomatic means.”
Over the last year, the territorial gains for the Ukraine military have stagnated following the failure of it’s 2023 count-offensive against Russia. Meanwhile, Russian forces have become entrenched in positions across the Donbas region while making steady advances.
“It is certain that the war will end sooner with the policies of the team that will now lead the White House. This is their approach, their promise to their citizens,” Zelensky said in the interview, as translated by the BBC.
Zelenskyy noted that he spoke with Trump following his historic victory in the presidential election earlier this month, adding that the conversation was a “constructive exchange.”
“He is on the side of supporting Ukraine, appreciates our strength, integrity and courage,” Zelenskyy said of Trump.
On the campaign trail, Trump has vowed to end the war and claimed the invasion would not have happened if he was occupying the Oval Office. The president-elect has also claimed military aid to Kyiv is a drain on U.S. resources.
Recently, Trump has nominated former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) as his director of national intelligence causing controversy due to her non-interventionist foreign policy views. Gabbard has also claimed the Biden administration caused the Russian invasion of Ukraine by not closing the door on Ukraine becoming apart of NATO.
