Michael Douglas told Bill Maher he was “pissed” after seeing Tuesday’s election results and he’s flabbergasted that Republicans are not viewed as the “party of the people” while Democrats are tagged as “elitists.”

Douglas joined Maher on Friday’s Real Time and after discussing what a fan Douglas’s father, the late Kirk Douglas, was of Maher’s, the actor offered some thoughts on Vice President Kamala Harris’s loss to President-elect Donald Trump.

“Wednesday morning, I was just ro pissed at this razor thin race, right? It was going to be so close, you know, with all these polls — and it’s a wipeout,” Douglas said, adding that his day did get better as he went on to hit a hole in one on the golf course.

Douglas pointed to the economy as the simple reason Democrats lost. While the administration can tout economic gains and a healthy stock market, inflation is still affecting middle class Americans on a daily basis. Douglas narrated and produced a documentary called America Is Burning this year that examines the shrinking middle class in the United States and the stock market economy versus the labor economy.

“We’ve lost our middle class,” Douglas argued.

The actor said the economy is where Democrats are quickly losing voters.

“In 40 years, the stock market has increased 5,000% and real earning wages have increased 14%. So 50% of the country owns stocks and you’ve heard they’re not complaining much right now, but those people who are going week to week with the inflation, it is killing them,” he said. “And I think we really underestimated it, and the very fact now that we could talk about Republicans as being the people, the party for the people, and that we have this elitist party on the left, Democrats, is wild.”

“It’s crazy and yet there’s truth in it,” Maher said. “I understand why they just want to break shit.”
